[Player Ratings] Norwich 1-0 Arsenal: Awful Gunners Deserved What They Got

By on October 20, 2012

Santi Cazorla Arsenal

Arsenal slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Norwich after Vito Mannone showed why he’s our third choice goalkeeper with a 20th minute gaff that put it on a plate for Grant Holt to net a close range winner.

The Italian could only parry a long-range effort back into the danger zone and Holt was on hand to tap home. If you haven’t seen the goal you can watch highlights here.

We were extremely poor throughout and could hardly muster a chance at goal. Unfortunately it was a million miles away from the performance against West Ham last time out and really we didn’t deserve anything from the game. Norwich worked harder than us and were worthy of the three points. Here are my player ratings for Arsene Wenger’s men.

Arsenal Player Ratings

Mannone – 5 – Should have done much better with the goal. It was a powerful shot but the Italian should have pushed it away from danger instead of palming it straight to the feet of Holt. Also went wandering in the second half that nearly cost us a asecond.

Santos – 6 – Solid enough at the back but offered little going forward. We missed the pace of Gibbs down the left.

Jenkinson – 6 – Got forward more than Santos but his crossing was a little below par. Although he didn’t have much in the box to aim at!

Mertesacker – 6 – Could maybe have reacted quicker to Mannone’s error and a second half slip could have proved costly.

Vermaelen – 6 – Like his partner, got away with a slip near the halfway line in the second half. Steady enough apart from that.

Arteta – 7 – Kept things ticking over and enjoyed plenty of possession but didn’t dominate and dictate play as he usually does.

Cazorla – 7 – Not at his best but still showed his class on occasion.

Ramsey – 6 – Quiet game from the Welshman. Did little to show Arsene Wenger he deserves to start ahead of the fit again Jack Wilshere.

Gervinho – 5 – Fluffed a late chance when he delayed too long when in space and didn’t even manage to get a shot off. Final ball poor all evening.

Podolski – 5 – Anonymous. Hardly offered anything positive other than a few simple passes.

Giroud – 5 – Also Anonymous. Worked fairly hard up top but just couldn’t get in the game.

Subs

Chamberlain – n/a – forced off after just minutes.

Arshavin – 6 – Showed some decent touches and nice footwork but couldn’t find an end product.

Gnarby – 6 – Fair play to the young lad. He came on to make his senior debut and showed no fear. Looks like he could be one for the future.

So Schalke up next and we’ll have to put in a much-improved performance if we’re to stop Huntelaar, Afellay and co.

Not the end of the world.
Had to lose sometime and was likely to have been today with such a poor performance.
    International duty is no excuse.
Norwich played with fire in their hearts, an appetite for battle and the determination to win.
What a limp, lamentable and lacklustre performance from the arsenal
Did they even want to play let alone want to win?
We are owed an apology for this abject, dismal disappointment.
The team should all donate a day’s pay to a good cause. They didn’t earn it!
Generous ratings for over confidence and an arrogant approach to the match and the opposition.

Worrying performance. Worst i have seen in a long time. I just dont get how we can suddenly deliver such a bad game. Ramsey was back to last seasons form, and the worst player on the pitch. If I were wenger today I would yell at every single player!

It’s clearly to do with the international break. Gibbs and Walcott got injured and the time away broke up our rhythm. It favoured Norwich because it gave them time to get over their recent disappointments and develop some resolve. We should still have been able to beat them but it was always going to be a tough game.

I’m sorry but norwich showed exactly why they are in the relegation zone &still beat us. How many times did they get behind our defence yet carelessly let us off the hook? I’v watched arsenal very few times this season(liverpool, montpellier, sunderland, chelsea), majorly because of the low entertainment value in our football nowadays. I appreciate the improved defensive solidity, but apart from cazorla, there seems to be very little flair to our game. &giroud is just a hardworking bendtner, very little technique

If Bendtner worked hard he’d be a top class player, and I think Giroud will prove to be just that. He needs something to work with though, and he’s probably had 2 decent crosses all season from dozens of attempts. Granted he’s missed a few good chances on the floor, but following his WHU goal, you’d expect him to improve and he didn’t have any chances today.
I don’t think he lacks technique to any serious degree, it just looks that way because he spends most of his time tangling with defenders.

I thought the goal was a bit more complicated. The shot moved on it’s way, but Mannone seems to have a tendancy to spill shots outwards rather than away from goal, so I agree he could have done better, but Holt should have been offside – it was Santos who played him on. You can’t expect Mertesacker to make up that ground on a striker who was already facing the goal, but I just think that Gibbs might have been in line with the other defenders. Maybe it’s a case of Santos not being on the same wavelength as the others who’ve played together all season, but I certainly wouldn’t blame Mert for that. Not that he had a great game or anything.
I thought Ramsey offered nothing in this game, and Coquelin probably would have done better, particularly considering Norwich counter attacked so effectively on us last season, and Coq’s pace and defensive nouse might have been handy today. That said, Wenger clearly wanted to keep the side from the last game, so it’s understandable why Aaron was picked – should have subbed him sooner, though, imo.
Gerv has been a great option through the middle, but has rarely impressed on the wing since he’s joined. He slowed the play today and couldn’t beat the fullback. I see him as a central striker now – Giroud would have been better on the wing!
Thought Jenkinson continued his great defensive form from the start of the season, and didn’t do much wrong. I agree, of course, that his crossing was poor, though and this impacted Giroud’s performance (obv not only Jenkinson’s delivery was poor). Giroud tried hard and linked the play very well at times but had nothing work with.
Verm has to improve. He started the season really well but cracks are starting to appear.

After 7 years this is the great youth and performance Arsene has built for us !
    Rejects and useless youth.
Gibbs, Ramsey, jenkinson, the Ox and others over rated and pure media hype cos of British / welsh origins !
Any other club would sack manager at such performances yet we allow it cos Wenger feeds the media/ FA/ fans with false British hype and promise.
That’s why Wilshire was on bench.
    Publicity stunt to please fans.
Everyone gets excited at a kid who hasn’t played for 14 months as if he’s messi or Ronaldo ?
    Wow.
Obviously this team is getting nothing this year and that will make 8 years dry.
Wenger will leave giving some crap excuse.
People will salute his honesty and forget his failed legacy and excuses.
New manager will sell all the rejects Arsene has brought and sell all the British garbage that keeps costing us trophies and buy real talent like arteta and Cazorla.
    More real players !!
The fact Ramsey is allowed to play repeatedly shows how desperate , blind and stupid we are.

Arsenal are no longer a real competitive club !

Sell all the 14 rejects and buy quality.

    Wenger out !!

Hyperbole, xenophobia, don’t you think you need to find another team. Try Olympiakos.

we are tired of excuses the best team in London has to up its game lest be overtaken by others e.g Chelsea.
    In wenger we rust.
I now think we need a trophy winning manager not one who sacrifices it for profits

Shocking performance all round. One of the worst performnace I have seen in years, even worst than the lost to MU. If they palyed MU yesterday, it would have been a cricket score. Hence, I am shocked at theratings given. For me, Ramsey, Santos, Podoklski, Giroud don’t derserve more than zero. Ramsey and Santos was so bad and tentative in their display. Giruoud is not suited for our style; he is only good as an impact player like Dzeko.Podolki was not existent.
Only players who deserve any points were Ox and Gnarby. They even with their cameo performance were better than the rest.
Like I mentioned earlier, playing Giroud was a mistake. There was no movement in the attack, ger would have given us the movement and switch plays, which would then brought Carzorla and Podolski into the picture.
Ramsey was dithering on the ball, going nowhere and then passing the ball sideways. Totally out of his depth!!!!
I feel that some changes would have to be made. If Wilshire or Diaby cannot play, then Coq should be there. And, play Vermallen as left back as a temperory measure, until Gibbs is back.

This was a game that a few players should have been given a go. Players like Arshavin and Coq should have started, even players like Chamakh and Djouru should have been considered for two reasons.
    1) Our ‘first choice’ team has played a lot of minutes this season, both for club and country and are not going to be able to play at the top level all season without respite, others need to be trusted to give them chance to rest and recharge.
    2) Respectfully, Norwich is a team we should cruise past, that didn’t happen, we were totally outclassed, could have been 3-0, when players who are not quite first team regulars are finally given the opportunity they should take it especially against relegation contenders such as Norwich, if they can’t take opportunities like that they shouldn’t be at a club like Arsenal. Fringe players eager to impress, I feel would have had a positive impact on not only the outcome of this game, but on the rest of the campaign too. Time will tell, but realistically we are out of the title race I feel and if quick improvement isn’t made we are going to have a very tough time making top 4

    We need a striker,a goalkeeper n a defensive midfielder.

What will happen in January when most players usually have injuries? in Man city, Man u, Chelsea everybody is a star and won’t cry of injuries. That is what makes a difference of who wins the trophy after January.

    If Wenger buys about 5 quality players now e.g. Lopez/Falcao (striker); creative midfielder like Carzola to assist him pass the ball to strikers; defensive midfielder like Arteta, A fast creactive winger who has the ability to score and make reasonable assists; A no-nonsense central defender then Wenger;

-Would not buy any players for the next two-three seasons he will build on these top quality players.

-His other business would be selling the other mediocre players eventually offloading the wage bill.

    -High chances of winning trophies

The reason strikers need technique is so they don’t spend 90minutes grappling with defenders, &its funny the number of times they were through on our goal without our defenders to grapple with

U guys should put up a banner on wednesday, that says ”WENGER STOP FORCING RAMSEY IN OUR TEAM! DO THE RIGHT TIN!” I Think dat team isnt balanced and even wenger doesnt know where ramsey is most effective. HOW CAN U PLAY HIM IN SONGS POSITION? So Ramsey replaces song? Play him on d left flank and u wil get the best of him! Or sell him! Must ramsey play for arsenal? We must investigate wat exactly is d agreement between Ramsey’s mum and wenger! OH WHY IS ARSENAL THAT HAS TO HAVE SUCH A SICK SICK MENTALLY DRAINED MANAGER??!! I wil say it one more time… ARSENAL WONT WIN ANYMORE TROPHIES UNDER WENGER! Watch this space and… MARK MY WORDS!!!

Guyz stop barking ..all we need is an attacker simply..oliver giroud or wat u call him is not fit for our style of play.I personally fink wenger should use gervinho as a central stricker till he buys a new world class striker come january….morova mannone cant make it here…we should sell him to any italian club coming for him n get a gud keeper…Vermalean is loosing focus…make much mistakes n cost us d 2 goals against chelsea….lemme stop here i was ashamed of ma team yestaday..enuf beef 4rm fwends……plz u ova rated dose guyz…jst giv carzola d rating….podolski is making no impact on our team..if his gud as a central attacka let him b there…with dis below par performance d next 15yrs there’l b no trophy in our cabinet

So extremely disappointed in the Arsenal team. Ten points behind the leaders so early in the campaign, is very hard to swallow. This performance just underlines the fact that this team put together by our dear “Know-it-all” Mr. Wenger is still not a championship-winning team.
Motivated and focused Championship material also has poor performances but somehow they grind out a win against all odds.
This team, sadly does, however, not possess these qualities as yet.

Ha!ha!typical arsenal fans, their players are the best in the world and can even beat real and barca combined, but thats after a win or two, then after a losing a game the same old whining continues,!arsenal fans are just like their manager, and ive read a comment saying that arsenal might lose the tag ‘best team in london’ dude its 2012,! Not 2004!

    1) These ratings are off
    2) A. Santos was the worst player on the pitch by a mile. Offered nothing going forward, was reckless in challenges and always out of position (Arteta had to cover for him many times. ARTETA!!! A DMF covering for a LB). You could sense his teammates not wanting to play with him because he drags the team down with his laziness. Can’t you sense it?
I seriously love players from Arsenal, as long as they are loyal and show heart (or they don’t show heart but are talented enough as is): but Santos seems disinterested. At least Chamakh works hard for the team…
    3) Ramsey was the second worst player. I’ve defended him for long enough, often citing how the injury has stalled his progress. He either doesn’t make the simple pass and over dribbles and loses possession, or simply misplace passes
    4) Santos and Ramsey had lost possessions most times. Watch the game again. There was a good 20 minutes in the game where every time Arsenal lost possession, it was because of them.
    5) 10 minutes in the game you could already see how tough the night will be. And I will tell everyone this: if you see the midfielders pressing early on in the game, you’re in for a treat b/c it will be a good game by Arsenal. If you don’t (like this game), it’s gonna be a tough game. International duty? Yes, 15 players were sent away. Intl duty as an excuse? No, you are professional players.
    6) Norwich is by no means a great team, but you can see their heart in this game. Pressing, pressing, pressing.
    7) Yes, the goal was a bit lucky, but Arsenal does not deserve to win this game at all.
    8) Gnarby was good. I like these players: work hard, no bullshit, make the simple pass…players like Coquelin and Yennaris. Very underated.
    9) The shot that led to the goal had no curl, which made it very hard to predict its trajectory, so I wouldn’t blame Manonne too much for parrying the shot in the path of Holt.
    10) What I do blame was the 4 players not closing down when the first shot was taken. In terms of position it was between the LCB, LB and DMF.
    11) I feel Giroud is a bit Chamakh 2.0, but I have faith in him. He does seem a bit clumsy and un-Arsenal, but look at him jump. He’s won a lot of aerial battle.
    12) Gervinho still has room to improve. Converting him from a WF to CF is a bit hit and miss. Yes, he is fast and is a very good dribbler (like Henry). However, his finishing…sigh.
