Arsenal Player Ratings vs Schalke: The Truth!

By on October 25, 2012

Arsenal lost 2-0 at home to Schalke on Wednesday night in their Champions League Group B encounter. Here is player ratings from our resident Arsenal fan ‘Lloyd the Gooner’.

Andre Santos Arsenal

Mannone – 5. Not much wrong tonight but is not and won’t ever be good enough.

Jenkinson – 6. Did nothing wrong but uninspired going forward.

Mertesacker – 5. With that midfield in front of him I am loath to criticise. But he was at fault for the first goal. Would have been much worse without him.

Vermaelen – 5. Again far from faultless but more good than bad from him.

Santos – 1. A point for wearing the shirt. A joke really. And the fault is not his. Why would our board and manager actually have the cheek to try and pass him off to us as a professional footballer?

Arteta – 4. Not really his fault but needs legs alongside him. Wenger has allowed the situation to develop whereby he just hasn’t got those legs available to him.

Cazorla – 6. Tried. But was the ONLY creative force and just couldn’t deliver on his own. Another victim of the manager’s poor judgement in team selection and squad management.

Coquelin – 7. Our best player. The only athlete in midfield and carried others. We would have been overrun without him.

Ramsey – 2. As at Norwich couldn’t find a single telling pass. A liability to those around him. I said earlier in the season maybe Norwich was his level but now I suspect the championship beckons.

Podolski – 3. Tonight I started to doubt him. It may be that he is also a victim of the lack of balance in midfield. I hope so because that performance was nowhere hear good enough.

Gervinho – 4. Easy to pick on him. Very little service except the odd long chase. Has obvious flaws but kept going and several others deserve pelters before him.

Of the subs only Gnabry is worth a mention. He showed invention but is green and we should use him wisely at CL level. If other creative forces are still not available, I would play him this weekend.

Arsene Wenger. I value more than I can say here what he has done for the club but that cannot excuse poor judgement of players, team selection and failure to tell us the truth. Ramsey, for example, once again it is clear he isn’t good enough so why does he persist with him? Why does he not sell him and look elsewhere?

The Board. Should apologise for the thinness of the squad, the fact that the manager cannot afford to get a purchase wrong, etc, etc, etc.

On a positive note with a fit Diaby and Wilshere we would have won that tonight!!!

The entire team played badly, the team lacked creativity, Gnabry appears to have talent and should be given more time or even start some games. However, your rating is too consrvativative, unbalanced and shifts blame to individuals yet they failed as a group.

I agree with TDS that the team played oorly as a whole. It was like watching a slow death. I cant understand why the subs werent introduced earlier to change things. It was clear that Schalke were in the ascendancy, things werent working for Arsenal and that some of heir players were tiring. Santos should have been hooked at halftime and Koscielny should have come on with Vermaelen reverting to left back.

You have rated the players now I take the joy of rating you as a “Rater”. Our first shot on target came from Gnarby in the 94th minute and you never make mention of this. Instead you go on to hammer Santos who in my opinion did exceptionally well unless you do not know who and how Farfan plays. I give you a generous rating of a 3 as a rater

Oh Cummon.. You are saying that Santos played exceptional.. He made mistakes all over.. Playing players on side id his hobby.. For no reason he tackles when he should run along and get the ball out of play.. He runs along with the player in the penalty area where he should tackle.. He was a pure disappointment as even a football player (keep apart Arsenal).

Absolutely right , Lloyd. No punches pulled in a scathingly accurate analysis.
The board are laughing all the way to the bank.
No adequate quality, absolutely no strategy and little or no integrity. Players, manager and board must all accept their share of the responsibility that we are not good enough, not financed enough, not successful enough. Spot on again Lloyd!

predictable shame….the problem of Arsenal is that AW is competent enough to avoid full catastrophe in long term distance to let Arsenal get rid of himself

Its a shame that most arsenal fans have no brains. Yesterday’s game was a disappointment but to bad the manager and the team like most here is absolute ignorance. I wonder how bashing the team will improve their play. Don’t call it blind support, criticize your but do it constructively. For example, how does the writer know mannone will never be good? The same thing stuart pearce said about dennis bergkamp and david platt but how foolish they made him look.

I wish Manone well and he might be Ok in a lower league – but he was available last summer for not many £ millions and .. no takers! Are all the other clubs wrong ? If you watch him closely … he is NOT athletic. He cannot jump well and does not command his area. His handling is insecure and his decision making scarey. Please say why you think he is going to be a top keeper ??

      October 25, 2012 at 10:37 am

Better still … please explain why Arsene has left us with about 5 young keepers and NOT ONE who is mature and experienced ??

I will tll you why … because his loyalty to youth above all else is taking time to die. The same as his flat wage structure. This was NOT for the Directors…it was for Arsene and has been a disaster (or perhaps you don’t agree ???)

As for me, i will keep on saying the fact. And fact is that as long as ramsey keep starting our match, this is how our match will continue to end up. Every other players will be poor when he is playing with them. I knw what am saying i have observed arsenal very well, since last year, there no a match which ramsey did not start and we lost or even draw, that means we won every match that ramsey did not start with us. But we lost all the match he started eccept 2 or 3

Arsenal was lightweight at midfield. Wenger shouldn’t have sold Alex Song since Diaby can’t stay fit. no matter how tidy player Arteta might be, he wouldn’t often excel without a powerful milfieder besides him.

Wlshere will replace Ramsey soon. Gervinho is too inconsistant, why buy 2 forwards and then play a winger that loses the ball 9 times out of 10 up front ??

    @ lloyd the gooner

you say the board should apologise for the thinness of the squad. last night there was no less than 9 of our first choice 18 sitting in the stands
szcesney, sagna, gibbs, wilshire, diaby, rosicky, walcott, chamberlain and fabianski. the board is not at fault for injuries, if those 9 were fit they would have all been in the 18 and most from the start. however, the board is at fault for sanctioning the current strategy put forward by the management team. some of the salaries are not high enough and some of the salaries are too high. too much emphasis is placed on purchasing 4 or 5 average players, every season, when at the same time there is massive investment in the academy. surely, the academy can produce at least 4 or 5 average players, leaving the funds to be spent on 1 or 2 world class performers and raising the salaries of the current world class performers. i mean who would you rather have in the first team squad (including those out on loan)

    miquel or squillaci ?
    ryo or arshavin?
    afobe or chamakh?
    henderson or denilson?
    gnabry or park?
    meade or santos?

Brave enough to give Ramsey a 2 !!!
    Well done.
Finally a gooner with balls to say the truth !

So many blind fans who keep supporting that welsh twat cos of old injuries and welsh origins.
Like players don’t get injured and leave.
He is a liability costing us every week.

Arsenal is not a dam charity club.
Only the best must stay and we have more than 14 crap players on high wages.

Ferguson would never have accepted all this !
Yet Arsene the blind p*ssy allows it.
Keeps him in power. Makes money for board and FA gets failed English youth.
All happy except die hard fans who pay so much for failed promises and lame excuses.

    So sad.

I am Welsh just like Ramsey and I gave him a 2 based entirely on performance. He is not favoured by anybody BECAUSE he is Welsh. He is not a ‘Welsh twat’ he is just a poor player.Insults of that kind diminish any value there may have been in your point of view.

Wenger is sick in his brain, di matio of yestarday is even making more grogress than him. Which coach in premiership will allow ramsey to sit on the bench not to talk playing him as first eleven, and after all his poor perfomance, still allow him for 90 minuts.

  19. Toye

    October 25, 2012 at 11:59 am

Every coaches make change to chage their games when there was dificulties and once they make the changes they see the outcome always good, but wenger’s case his changes alwaws worsen matter cos he wont remove the player was nt playing fine, but the one is playing well, he will now bring arsavin, charmak, and some other useless on the bench.

It is clear that you, like I and all Arsenal fans are frustrated seeing our beloved team play rubbish football, but sincerely, you’re not right to single out individuals for criticism, are you?

The team, for the last two games, has played poorly, in fact extremely poorly!
No single player can be pointed out for praise in the Norwich and Schalke games. I don’t agree with you when you call for Ramsey’s sale. In the Man City game he was almost Man Of The Match, meaning he can greatly improve, but still hasn’t got the ability to thrive in a team that is steadily underperforming.

Verdict? He is still young, so he needs time, which I’m sure he will get under Wenger. Do you remember Jeremie Aliadiere? If you do, then you under what it means when I talk of patience and Wenger.

As for the squad being thin, I totally disagree with you. I don’t know how many players you think we should have, but I feel we have more than enough in some areas. For example:
It is hard to believe that Koscielny hasn’t been able to play with Mertesacker fit! Can you imagine we have played almost the whole season so far with third choice goalie, that we still have Wilshere, Sagna, Rosicky, Diaby unavailable? That we have not had Theo, Chamberlain, Gibbs, playing lately, yet we have had Carzola, Arteta, Ramsey, Coquelin playing?

Come on mister, Arsenal have the squad to compete, but what we should all ask ourselves is what has caused a dramatic fall from grace as quickly as this, to the extent of being unable to create a single scoring chance, other than being ruthless on individual players!!

@ patrick, i knw what am saying, whenever ramsey plays every other players get tired and their performance is always poor, but watch arsenal when he is not included, they are like the best team in the world. For example, AC he played at san siro, remember their performance? The same AC at emirate which he did not start, look at the way we play that day. Think of every match we’v ever performed very, it was becos he was not included in starting eleven. And arsenal av not draw or lost and game without ramsey in our starting 11 since the september last year, but lost every matches he played eccept 2 or 3. Wenger himselfs knw that fact that was why he bench on final day of premier league. Just try and check what am saying if its lie or not.

Am an amateur with comments, but have been long time Arsenal fan. Feel Ramsey is similar to Eboue. Can’t understand support from Wenger, but again I may not have sufficient knowledge to see what he contributes. Also cannot see why they left Santos in the game so long. He seemed a poor selection given Schalke strengths. Disappointed.
