[Player Ratings] Arsenal 0-2 Schalke: Gunners Disgraceful Once Again

By on October 24, 2012

Arsenal lost 2-0 to Schalke at the Emirates on Wednesday evening to leave the Gunners lying second in Group B.

Many Gooners thought Arsenal couldn’t play any worse than they did against Norwich. Unfortunately we were all wrong. Before tonight we held a proud record of not having lost to foreign opposition at the Emirates for 45 games. Only Manchester United have recorded a victory during that period.

This group of players relinquished that record with a whimper. There was no effort, no passion, no creativity, no organisation, no leaders and most importantly….no goals.

Like Norwich, Schalke fully deserved their win and have in Huntelaar the clinical finisher Arsenal sorely miss. Hopefully Arsene could see the sides failings a lot clearer from the stands. This was one of our worst displays in recent memory and there was so much wrong, it’s truly worrying. Here are my player ratings.

Player Ratings

Mannone – 5 – Lucky not to give away a first half penalty after lunging at Afellay. Will be disappointed with Huntelaar’s goal as well.

Jenkinson – 5 – For all his effort Jenko’s poor positional play, along with Santos, allowed Huntelaar in to open the scoring. The right back was slow in pushing up and playing the Dutchman onside.

Mertesacker – 5 – Made some important blocks and interceptions in the first half but played his part in Arsenal late demise.

Vermaelen – 5 – Should have organised his back line more effectively. As captain, he needs to speak up and make sure his fellow defenders are in-line when he pushes up. Unfortunately booked early on.

Santos – 3 – He was so bad i felt sorry for him in the end. While those in front of him could have offered more support, Santos was caught out of position on countless occasions. Also slow to push up and played Huntelaar onside for the opener and second goal created down his side.

Arteta – 5.5 – Did little wrong and passed neatly as usual.

Coquelin – 6 – Made some excellent tackles and at least put some effort in. Could have covered Santos more though.

Cazorla – 6 – Saw a lot of the ball in the first half and was making things happen, but faded in the second period. Still our main creative force but needs better players around him.

Podolski – 5 – Anonymous again. Really needs to get himself in the game more and improve his movement off the ball. Should also have helped out the hapless Santos more. Hopefully this is just a bad spell for the German.

Gervinho – 4 – Disgraceful dive in the second half and wasted several opportunities to create something. He either ran into a defender or wasted the final ball.

Ramsey – 4 – Not in the game at all. Played the easy passes well enough but doesn’t do enough to warrant a starting place.

Giroud – 5 – Barely touched the ball.

Gnarby – 5 – While the youngster showed his skill with a superb turn soon after coming on and had Arsenal’s only shot on target, he also lost the ball on several occasions and his sloppy pass resulted in Schalke’s second goal.

Arshavin – 5 – Barely touched the ball.

So, a second consecutive poor performance. QPR at home presents a great opportunity to put the last week behind us and get back on track. Let’s hope Arsene and the players take it.

With all honesty i feel AW has lost his touch with his outdated coaching style of tactics and player signing,we can only manage to pull through this season if he signs a versatile striker and an experienced defender by Jan to maintain top four status then he shld kindly retire and go into admin. Lets get a more younger and agressive coach who will better motivate the team.

Lukman ayo – completely agree with you mate, was a shocking display tonight. Santos looked completely out of his depth, and stupidly unfit. Awful at defending, and to be honest he’s not all that great going forward either. Makes you realise more and more how good young gibbsy is. Ramsey hasn’t done anything to convince me that he’s going to be a fully fledged arsenal regular. He’s nothing particularly special about him. Loses the ball way to regularly, and seems to over hit passes more often than not. GERVINHO IS NOT A STRIKER! That is easy to see!! The team look disheartened and very sluggish. This needs to change very very quickly otherwise things are only going to get worse. But I’m staying positive, because we have enough quality to win something this year, and I still think we will. In Arsene I trust, as I always will.

We are simply not good enough. We cannot compete at a high level having lost RVP, Fabregas Nasri and Song. Apart from cazorla and jenkinson there is no sparkle in this Arsenal side… We badly need Wilshere, Diaby, Walcott and the Ox.. Ramsey is a shocker

Ramsey is our problem, even when he was playing rubish, they allowed him for the full time. Untill wenger stop playing this guy our best results will contineu to be a point. Am still wodering why a player as poor as ramsey should start a great team like our arsenal. Am totally disapointed in wenger. I dnt think wenger is alright, he sick in the brian, maybe mental problem sory to say.

    Santos – rubbish
    Gervino – rubbish
    Mannone – rubbish

Wenger – rubbish ..past his sell by date . 8th season in a row – Time for serious change

Ramsey isn’t a starter! LPod is playing the wrong formation, he is more deadly in the middle. Gervinho is not a main striker (support striker may be)! We lost the pace (Theo & Alex Oxdale). Wenger is either has selection and substitution problems even Chamakh would have showed more fight in the final third. Francis Coq didn’t cover for slow out of shape Santos… 0:0 is not a game plan, worst of all Vermealen and Per touch the ball more than our forwards pathedic game plan…. No other team does that… Can’t wait for Sagna to start LB (because Carl J is doing his job) until Gibbs is ready, and Wilshere relegate and break up Arteta/Ramsey combo. Dispointing but not the end of the world. Go Gunners.

The AGM tomorrow will be about how much mountains of money the board is sitting on while we look like a mid-table team. Wenger will come out and say he’s been in the top four every year but will forget he hasn’t won anything for 7 years and at this rate it will be 8 years and running. He’s simply not gotten the best out of his players for a long time and his lack of spending show that our cabinet will be bare still. What good is a shiny new stadium if you don’t have any silverware in it?

I don’t think we should be blaming individuals on today’s performance. We seem to buy players that have no trouble scoring goals at will, when they played for their previous teams e.g. Giroud, podzol ski, gervinho etc. They need to be given scoring oppotunities to score, and with arsenal’s style of play at the moment that is’nt happening. We seem to be taking to long to move the ball from the back to the front with to many sort passes allowing the opposition to get back behind the ball.We need to be quicker with our movement. We do have the players there to score we just have to provide the chances.

This is 100% the major issue. Everyone is yelling for another striker, which might help with depth no doubt, but we have to stop and ask: what could even the most clinical finisher do when we don’t have a shot on goal until the 90th minute, as was the case tonight?

This is something we’ve seen since the Chelsea match. In most of our matches before that, teams that knew they couldn’t match our quick passing and pressing game simply parked the bus, 11 men in their own box. It worked for draws for a few matches until some of our forwards started to find their finishing touch; when you get that much possession in the final 3rd, it’s bound to happen.

Now, however, teams are still keeping 11 men behind the ball (Schalke was all match), but instead of conceding space all the way back to their own penalty area, they are closing down in midfield. Doing so should leave space in back, but they are counting on the fact that we won’t make them pay with a ball over the top… and we never do.

I’m not a fan of the super direct game; I really buy into the technical possession style completely. And yet, as the saying goes, everything in moderation. There can be no doubt that, until we start showing the willingness to put a long ball into the box here and there (and just for the hell of it if nothing else), teams are going to put 10 men along the midfield stripe. Then all of our fluidity and technical mastery will do nothing but keep hold of the ball in harmless positions, like today against Schalke.

Of course, it doesn’t help when guys are starting to get sluggish because injuries are making any real rotation possible. With players coming back, not to mention, Wenger coming back down from the stands for CL matches, hopefully we can see a bit less tentative play and things will be on the up and up again.

Everyone seems to think we need to add to the squad to solve our problems, that will just cause a problem on the bench with having no space there to allow another top class forward,eg lorente, benzima etc.to watch the game from the sideline because they weren’t give ample opportunities to score goals.I also not a fan of the direct play,i support arsenal because of their style of football. But the most important thing I think that i have learn’t from watching and sometimes trying (BADLY) to play the game, is that the quick movement of the ball, and letting the ball do the work provides more chances to score goals, rather than short side way passing which arsenal seem to be doing at the moment.

To all you all have said, i will still make the same comment i usually make. I strongly believe Arsenal FC players, coaches, technical and board dont have a ear for the fans which is very bad. Why do we keep converting wingers to strikers at all time.?. We cannot win a trophy this way.NEVER NEVER. I think its time Arsene Wenger needs to to see things clearly, he knows the right players but think we the fans dont deserve it. its so bad and poor. Ramsey is not a footballer, Gervinho needs to come from the bench and the coach needs to take things hard on this players. Pay walcott for good cos he seem to be our best player if you ask me. I wonder if they ever read this comments. it really hurts so bad.

please wenger go to Holland and Spain to sign a striker. Will be a shame if we miss champions leagues cause we struggle on this each time.

Why is no one blaming the stand-in coach, Bould, who did not respond appropriately to the game. From the blast of the whistle, it was obvious that the game plan of Schalke was to target Santos and they got him out of position several times. At a stage when Kos was warming up, I thought had seen what every other person had seen and he was going to change Santos for Kos and play Vermalin on the left but I was shocked to find him coming out for the second half. We might have been missing key players, but the coach should have seized the initiative before we were punished. Bould is not a good coach.

      October 25, 2012 at 10:18 am

I agree with you Victor as Bould is not a good coach and I don’t like the fact he was taking all the credit for the defence playing well when he was never a good defender. Like he is saying he is better than Pat Rice and he couldn’t even tie the mans boots! Should have gone after Dennis as he would be perfect for the role as number 2 then to take over when AW retires.

One thing i do have to complain about is that the arsenal management seem to take to long to make a sub or change their tactics to change the course of the game.

the people who call for wenger’s head, should appreciate him beyond a couple of poor matches.
who do you propose to replace him? perhaps one of liverpool’s many failed managers?
I’d imagine why most of you support Arsenal is because of all that Wenger has done for the club.
Without Wenger, forget about attracting good players, and developing good youth at the club.
    Wenger is Arsenal!
    So STFU.

problem now is we miss diaby, wilshere, rosicky, gibbs, sagna, chamberlain…

Gervinho, podolski and giroud are all solid players, but are just replacements for Van Persie and to fill in a gap until better players – ryo, campbell, afobe, gnabry, etc – are ready to take over.
Forget about success for another couple of years.

i think its a disgrace that arsenal has a player like Santos in the squad.
i’d rather throw yennaris in there. good player with a future at the club. Santos is a clown.

    Ramsey is Arsenal’s problem.

somebody just tell me what he does in this team aside square-passing.

he cant head, cant shoot, looses the ball often, and cant tackle.

…and o, he’s always calling for the ball.

He’s the most overrated Arsenal player ever. Twat!!!

Arsenal fans come together and let us make Wenger know this. Why does Ramsey start. even if Jack and Diaby aint fit, Coquelin shd be starting ahead of Ramsey.

After more than 65 years of supporting Arsenal I am not prone to `knee jerk` reactions but have finally decided that it is time for change, not just of players but of ownership and management.
Thank you Mr. Wenger but it is time to hand over the reins and join Pat at the golf club. Mr. Bould you`re not in the running. Mr. Kroenke sell your shares go back to America and take Gazidis with you.

blaming ramsey is not fair, i think generally arsenal lack team spirit, their is no desire to score goals. All they do is to pass the ball on their own half, theirs no chemistry, no creativity.

  26. Drekkylord

    October 25, 2012 at 6:42 am

Ramsey is a back pass specialist, ramsey should be sold,he is not a potential match winner, when a team is loosing, ramsey like make opponent team to attack by passin’ back, cazorla is a bit fatique, arshavin should be allowed to play 10,arsenal needs aggressive players

complete teams attitude yesterday was like draw is enough.bould didnt have a plan b he was sticking to the subsitution as decided before the match.
according to me mertesacker was only the pic of the defenders tackling /heading all done by him alone.
santos is waste of lb (first brazilian who cant go past players)
jenkinson is not a modern rb dis guy is only concentrating on goin ahead and playin the ball back to merte!!!!he is trying not to make mistakes by doin jus half the job in the entire match the lad jus put in one cross dats poor.
for ramsey i jus feel his time is up at arsenal a talented guy but please show your talent some place else.you have cost us two back to back matches ramsey seems to be relaxed dat no one is goin to take him out of the team and his performance has dropped drastically since diaby injury denilson 2.0
you cant blame giroud/arshavin for lack of chances they on the pitch for a very short time.
our game suits counterattacking football but with the players at the back holdin the ball too much (arteta,tv5) the fwd players are not gettin enough touches of the ball.
dat needs to be sorted out.
i wud luv to c gnabry start the next match for a change.
