[Player Ratings] Arsenal 1-0 QPR: How The Gunners Rated

By  Published: 27th October 2012

Mikel Arteta Arsenal

The Gunners huffed and puffed to a 1-0 home win over QPR on Saturday afternoon at the Emirates. The result MAY prove more important than the performance. Here are ‘Lloyd the Gooners’ player ratings.

Mannone 6. Steady enough today. Doesn’t inspire, but one important block near the end was vital though.

Sagna 7. Considering he had been out for so long he did really well. Nowhere near his top form but a calming influence in the main. His experience could be a big factor in the coming weeks.

Mertesacker 6. Part of a defence whose off side line is more staggered than my Saturday night walk home from the pub.

Vermaelen 6. Not really about the defence today but only just gets a six as all of them panicked at the end.

Santos 4. Early on made Wright-Philips look like Garrincha (look him up). Rallied later it has to be said. I’m sure I saw him playing for the Gunners two years ago – sadly it was for the Gunners pub over Hackney Marshes. He can’t run, tackle or head a ball. How is he an Arsenal defender? Is Arthur Daly his agent?

Arteta 7. The goal (albeit suspiciously offside) was so important for the team, the club, the manager and the board that you could argue he deserved more. Great pro but needs legs in there with him.

Cazorla 6. Super little player we all know but really needs to get forward of the ball particularly in the absence of Diaby. Then the goals will come for him and the team.

Wilshere 7. We all wondered what sort of Jack we’d see. Well it was a confident, talented, aggressive, wonderful Wilshere. The only midfielder who consistently went beyond the ball and that created gaps for others. Welcome back.

Ramsey 5. Played better once he moved from the wide position. The manager hasn’t helped him by playing him there but has a long way to go to convince as a Gunners creator.

Giroud 6. Looked cumbersome today except when he leapt like a salmon for the header that led to the goal.

Poldolski 5. Anonymous. Generally the biggest disappointment of the summer buys. As with others though much of his problem stems from the balance of the side which is not right. He is a runner into space not a dribbler and nobody is finding him often enough. When he does get the ball there are no midfielders making forward runs for him to pass to. He could still come good this season. Sort it out Arsene.

Subs

Walcott. Couple of really good crosses. Should have been on much earlier.

Gervinho. Lively, then unluckily injured.

Arshavin. Excellent cameo. Worked hard(!) and provided a fine cross that led to the goal.

If you haven’t seen the goal or highlights, you can watch them here.

Agree it was as cumbersome performance at least there were 9/21 attempts on target. One paced midfield, Wilshere apart, failed to provide the service this new strike force needs. Crossing generally doesn’t make Giroud look anything other than ordinary. Podolski has become peripheral. Santos should never start another match. He is the weakest squad member, even worse than Djourou and Squillaci combined. With Ramsey not firing Coquelin should be retained to form the legs of the axis with Arteta. Gnabry should be selected above Walcott. Give Arshavin a run. Eisfeld deserves consideration. Athletic players returning to fitness with fire and desire on the bench. Bold decisions needed but we have an arch conservative manager who was once a revolutionary.

No position is suitable for Ramilson. He was easily dispossessed and merely make up the numbers on field.

Good ratings and of course Santos is the weakest point for arsenal, I wonder if he can stop the lethal striking force of Man U next Wknd!!!? Podolsky also need to improve on his position, pace & power if he wants to become s’thng in Arsenal unforgiving funs. Walcott need to sign the contract or sideline him till January and sell him s’where in Europe bt not our rivals.

Saved my weekend! Thank you Arteta for hungin out at the 6yard line…. Team worked hard, shots on goal were there… Should have started Gervinho/ Arshavin on the right instead of Ramsey. Because Sagna was game ready, the five and goes would have been more useful with little bit more pace and confidence player around. Aaron tried but not a winger hence no crosses no pace came in…. Podoski and Cazorla are making it easy to defend them, specially with Santos around them none of them get behind or crossed to the Box. Refreshing to see the experience of Sagna and passion of Wilshere back on the team..

There is a mob factor to the rating of players among arsenal fans.

Over the past few weeks the pantomime villains have been Santos and Ramsey. If we believe you then Santos did absolutely nothing all night and you know that’s not true. He had some bad times but i would have given him at least a 5. Ramsey played ok as well today especially once he came back to the middle.
I think we do ourselves no justice with the vitriol we apply to evaluating our performances.

      Ozed,
Agree we need to keep positive but Santos is a joke and a total liability.
Ramsey acknowledged as better in the right position. What a difference a goal would ave made to him.
The vitriol comes from the passion and the frustration with the quality and performance of the players bought or developed. Count the players bought in error and the dead weight needing to be shipped out. Note also the huge difficulty finding buyers gullible enough to take them off our hands. We have a large number of useless players nobody else wants who are draining the club of resources. Now who’s fault is that???

Ozed……..finally some balance and intelligence after Lloyd the Goner has spent his pessimistic and insulting commentary and ratings. AFC made QPR look like a very ordinary, bottom of the table team….well they are aren’t they and Wilshere was so great to see back in the saddle! Llloyd is too lazy to actually avoid the moronic masses who believe everything they write….he just rehashed the popular view, as ignorant and ill-informed as it is! Great comment and SO accurate OZED!

Weedonald your comments only make sense in context. You are rating players in comparison to the opposition today, Lloyd’s ratings are in relation to the standard we expect to compete with the top teams here and in Europe. You’d be happy in the championship. Lloyd’s ratings are fair and accurate with a bit of humour , much needed after 40 years of supporting this club. Thanks Lloyd!

I have to disagree on Ramsay. He was pretty good today, very unlucky not have scored.

The only midfielder who busts a gut to get into the box. He is playing out of position ND and making good runs. I noticed many times today he was open in a good position, but the players never looked up to find him. (Giroud a few times). He is slowly getting back to some form, no thanks to some idiots in our ranks who boo him every match.

As for Giroud he played alot better today, not hard considering that against Norwich he didn’t bother at all.

Poldolski has been great for us.

people dont see how much he works for the team. in the game today he help out santos alot at the back and he was always trying to make something happen and run back and help.

  13. Terry says:

ramsay is a 442 central mid… 3 midfielders is too crowded for him.. he likes to dwell on the ball and 433 is all about quick passing…
Santos is a liability indeed.. poor positionally and really does lack pace.
i would like us to play a 433 with this team.
    giroud
    Aoc podolski walcott
    arteta santi
    gibbs vermy mert sagna
    mannone

and we should not always pass the bal from def to mid and mid to the strikers we should swit defence into attack in a flash by crossing the ball to players like giroud, podolski from defence to our strikers.
santi as a cm is not a bad deceision, he has played there previously(at malaga) and is really good.

    ….Giro…..Pod…..

    TACTIC’S CHANGE’S:
    1. When in possession move toward the player with the ball – rather than away.
2.Arteta don’t!!! travel further than the halfway line incase of quick break with LB & RB out of position.
3.Increased movement for the ball = quicker & attacking passing – ATM pod, giro, germ just run to the opposing box and wait…useless in build up play.

I agree wit most people on here. Moving on to our next game against man united, Santos shouldn’t play in our defence or else he will make united look good and single handedly he will cost us 3points. Considering Gibbs is out, I would like to see vermalen at play left back and kocielny n merts central defence sagna right bk, arteta jack/coquelin and carzola in midfield and gervinho/chambo and gnabry/podolski on the wings Giroud/walcott upfront. U might argue about walcott upfront but all I know is against evans and carrick or ferdinard, walcott will be favourite to get on the end of any through ball simple as! (Pace Factor Game)

  19. Roland C Rozario says:

Arshavin has still the desire and trickery with the ball. His touch of the ball was excellent in delivery to give Arsenal the needed 3 points.
As I did mention Gnabry, Eisfeld and Arshavin should be given more playing time.
They have the talent to change the game!

  20. Family Enclosure Man says:

    A couple of things:

    1. I think of the judgements about Podolski are harsh: he certainly is NOT the most disappointing of the summer buys. He works hard, but the key point is what the hell is he doing out on the left wing? The man is a quality striker, not a left-winger/midfielder: he’scompletely wasted out there, which is why he appears to become peripheral to games. I’d prefer to see him playing as central striker, and to deploy 2 from Walcott/Oxlade/Gervinho/Arshavin on the wings.

    2. I know that he sometimes frustrates us all, but I still feel that Walcott is important for us. The number of goals and assists he produces relative to the time he spends on the pitch is good (check the stats if you don’t believe me), and most teams have to set up 20-30 yards deeper to defend against his pace when he plays. Quite simply, he worries the hell out of opposition defenders (or he should do), even when he doesn’t appear to be on top form. Regarding yesterday, I absolutely don’t understand why AW would have preferred Ramsay to him on the right-wing.

    3. Santos is vulnerable defensively, but he absolutely isn’t the worst player in the squad. He is skilful and dangerous going forward. That said, I’m hoping Gibbs will be back for next week: failing that, there is a case for playing TV5 at left-back and bringing Koscielny at centre-back. Trouble is, the latter has looked very iffy so far this season…

Terrible article. Wtf have you been watching to say that about poldi?? Don’t even know why I’m bothering to be honest. One of the most inaccurate and scathing ratings article I have seen from and arsenal ‘sypporter’. And btw santos had a very good game once he got into it.

Ramsey is a bunch of bad luck. Each time he starts Arsenal struggles. It is better Wenger stop using him as starter.

He hopes up and down the field and confuses other midfielders.

Wenger please drop him against Man U otherwise Arsenal will lose woefully.
