Manchester United are ready to open the bidding for Celtic star Victor Wanyama with a £12m bid this January, according to the Daily Mail.

The Kenyan international has become one of the SPL’s hottest properties after an excellent start to the new season and his form has attracted interest from the Premier League with Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal all said to be keeping tabs on the player.

Several scouts were in the stands to watch the imposing defensive midfielder more than hold his own against Xavi and Iniesta during Celtic’s shock 2-1 win over Barcelona on Wednesday night, with Wanyama opening the scoring with a first half header.

Among the crowd was Manchester United’s chief European scout Martin Ferguson and he understood to have sent another glowing report back to Old Trafford.

QPR had a £10m offer rejected for Wanyama in the summer and just last week Celtic boss Neil Lennon claimed his midfield general was worth £25m. However, Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to test his resolve with a £12m bid for the 21-year-old when the transfer window re-opens in the new year.

Fergie is keen to add to his midfield options and Wanyama is high on his wish-list but the Red Devils will face stiff competition from rivals City as well as Arsenal, who are also showing strong interest. The SPL champions signed Wanyama from Belgian side Germinal Beerschot for just £900,000 last year, so are guaranteed to make a huge profit if they are forced to cash in.

Wanyama has just over 18 months to run on his current contract and has so far refused to sign an extension, meaning Celtic will have a decision to make when the big-guns come calling either in January or next summer.
