Arsenal Transfer News: Wenger To Sign 3 In January Spending Spree

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to finally splash the cash this January and has targeted three new players in order to save the Gunners’ faltering season

Despite the transfer window being closed, there is always transfer gossip doing the rounds in the papers and we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest news during the coming months. Today, Arsenal are linked with big money moves this January.

Edin-Dzeko-Manchester-City

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to finally splash the cash this January and has targeted three new players in order to save the Gunners’ season, according to the Daily Mail.

With Arsenal currently sitting in eight position in the league after another disappointing performance during a 3-3 draw with Fulham at the Emirates on Saturday, the Club’s hierarchy are starting to worry about missing out on Champions League qualification and have given Wenger the go-ahead to spend when the window re-opens.

Wenger is believed to have identified three areas that need strengthening; a goalkeeper, a wide attacking player and a striker, and top of the Frenchman’s wish list are Swansea keeper Michel Vorm, Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha and Manchester City striker Eden Dzeko.

The Mail claim Dzeko – who came off the bench to score City’s winner over Tottenham on Sunday – is growing tired of his bit-part role at the club and Wenger is keen to offer him a way out of the Etihad. While a huge fan of Dzeko’s, could we afford his transfer fee and wages? I have my doubts and also question whether the player would leave the champions to go to a club battling for fourth.

However, should we fail to land the Bosnian, Athletic Bilbao forward Fernando Llorente and Atletico Madrid striker Adrian Lopez are understood to be the bosses back-ups. Those two are more realistic targets in my opinion.

Arsenal are also set to make a £9m bid for Zaha but it could take nearly £15m to persuade Palace to sell the 20-year-old, who’s recently been called up to the senior England squad. Zaha fits the Wenger-mold of player far more than Dzeko. Young, un-proven and it will take him a couple of years to establish himself in the first team. No doubt we’re in for the lad but i’m sure we’ll face some stiff competition and in a world where money talks, i’m not sure we’ll be the ones shouting the loudest.

The Mail also claim that Wenger wants a new keeper to not only act as back-up for Szczesny but possibly replace him as No.1 at the Emirates. Michel Vorm has been watched on several occasions this season while Liverpool’s Pepe Reina is also being tracked.

I’m not sure I buy this one. While I feel a new commanding keeper IS required to push Szczesny for the No.1 spot, i’m not convinced Arsene will replace the young Pole after handing him the No.1 jersey.

So the papers are sure we’ll be spending this January but are we targeting the right areas? A striker is most definitely required, no question, but i can only assume we’re in for Zaha as a replacement for Walcott. Which is worrying. Not only are we likely to lose money on the exchange, we’ll be left weaker as a result.

For me, a ball-winning midfielder should be high on the priority list this January. We’ve looked weak in the middle since Diaby picked up his predictable injury so surely the boss should be looking to strengthen in this department? I’d also argue that we need a versatile defender who can play centre-back as well as left-back.

It’s funny how off the back of three dreadful defensive displays, Arsenal aren’t linked with buying a defender or defensive midfielder?
