Klaas-Jan-Huntelaar

Schalke have moved to deny reports suggesting striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is on his way to Arsenal this January, according to Goal.com.

The Dutch international’s contract expires next summer and he has so far been unable to agree terms over an extension, prompting intense speculation over his future.

Arsenal and Liverpool have been strongly linked with the 29-year-old this season, with recent reports claiming the Gunners were close to agreeing a deal to sign the forward when the transfer window re-opens in January.

However, speaking after Schalke’s 1-0 win over Olympiakos in the Champions League last night, general manager Horst Heldt has dismissed these reports and insists no offers have come in for the player.

“It’s pure speculation. Either Arsenal make us an offer, otherwise it’s a load of nonsense.”

Huntelaar was also quizzed about reports linking him with a move to north London, but the former AC Milan hitman had nothing to say regarding his future.

“I know nothing.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is believed to be in the market for a striker this winter as he will be left short of options up front with Gervinho and Marounae Chamakh set to depart for the African Cup of Nations in January. A possible loan move for Thierry Henry has been suggested, but Huntelaar is a top target if the Frenchman opts for a more permanent solution.

But he will face stiff competition from Liverpool with Brendan Rodgers also desperate to add to his attacking options. Luis Suarez is the Reds only recognised first team striker and Rodgers has previously admitted he will look to bring in another front man in January, with Huntelaar believed to be high on his wish list.
