Chelsea have identified Andre Schurrle and Marouane Fellaini as possible additions this January, according to the Mirror.

The Blues desperately want to add a versatile forward to their squad when the transfer window re-opens in January, and Shurrle and Fellaini are their top two targets.

New interim boss Rafa Benitez is confident he can get Fernando Torres firing again but has indicated the need for more depth up front, and owner Roman Abramovich is willing to provide funds to add a powerful forward to the squad this winter.

Chelsea sent scouts to watch German international Shurrle in action for Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday night, as Abramovich prepares to make another move for the forward.

Leverkusen rejected Chelsea’s £22m offer for the 22-year-old in the summer after former boss Roberto Di Matteo identified him as a potential signing, and it seems their interest remains under Benitez.

However, it’s likely they will have to bid higher than £22m this time round, despite the players questionable form so far this season that has seen him score just 5 goals in 17 games.

Should any move for Schurrle fail, Chelsea have are also monitoring Everton’s Marouane Fellaini – who’s been in excellent form so far this season, scoring 6 goals in 11 games for the Toffees – but the Belgian is likely to be a more expensive acquisition.

The European champions maintain a long-running interest in Radamel Falcao but will have to wait until the summer before making a move for the prolific Columbian hitman, so they will try and sign a different type of forward this January.

The key for Chelsea is a versatile player who can play in several positions, and both Shurrle and Fellaini fit the bill.
