Wenger: RVP Still Texts Me & Watches Arsenal Games

By  Published: 30th November 2012

Arsene Wenger has revealed he still keeps in contact with former captain Robin van Persie and claims the Dutchman still watches Arsenal matches, according to the Daily Mail.

The Gunners boss signed van Persie from Feyenoord in 2004 and nurtured his raw talent to make him one of the best strikers in the world, with the 29-year-old netting an impressive 37 goals in 48 games to help guide Arsenal to a third-place finish last season.

However, despite his goals, the Gunners ended the season trophy-less for the seventh consecutive year and with only 12 months remaining on his contract, van Persie couldn’t be convinced to commit his future to north London and eventually signed for Manchester United in a £24m deal.

The move left a bitter taste in many Arsenal fans’ mouths, but Wenger has revealed the Dutch hitman still keeps in touch via text and claims he still watches Arsenal games.

‘He texts me sometimes, We keep in touch. He tells me he still watches Arsenal games.’

Wenger is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail

The main reason he’s still watching games is to convince himself that he made the right choice in leaving, I would guess ?!
I don’t doubt RvP had a real love of the Gunners, but that only takes you so far when you are at the age RvP is and with no sight of the kind of immediate improvement that was needed at Arsenal taking place towards the end of last season and over the transfer window.
I am a Gunner of many, many years now and I don’t hold it against RvP that he choose to leave at all … but he has tainted any chance of being revered with the Arsenal faithful for moving to one of our most bitter enemies in Man U – he really didn’t think hard enough about this, I think ? At least Henry went abraod to Barca and in so doing did not boost any of his main rivals in the EPL. This was the biggest ‘shot in the foot’ that RvP could of brought on himself with the fanbase at Arsenal !!

Didn’t show any ambition in the transfer window!!!! First we bought podolski, a player of quality that could compete for a place in ANY team. Then we bought the French league’s top scorer. Finally we got cazorla, undoubtedly the best Spanish midfielder not playing for barca. Not ambitious in the transfer market? Your having a laugh!

Face facts, it was about money. Yes footballing ambition did come into it, but only as far as he wouldn’t move for similar money to an inferior club.

    • It never was “our Arsenal”. Because you support the club doesn’t mean that you own it, or that it should be run the way that you think it should be run. Similarly, some Chelsea fans might want “their” Chelsea back; it’s not theirs, though; it’s Abramovich’s.

Spare me this “we want our Arsenal back” rubbish.

You don’t have a clue. Without the supporters there would be no club. Why do you think boards sack managers when the fans become vocal and attendance starts to drop.
