Arsenal To Miss Out On Huntelaar?

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is close to agreeing a new contract with Schalke after his agents met with the club, amid reports claiming Arsenal were lining up a move.

Despite the transfer window being closed, there is always transfer gossip doing the rounds in the papers and we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest news during the coming months. Today, developments on the future of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Klaas-Jan-Huntelaar

Arsenal target Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is close to agreeing a new contract with Schalke, according to Sky Sports News.

The 29-year-old striker is in the final year of his contract and has so far been unable to agree terms over a fresh deal. The Independent are one of several media outlets who’ve claimed recently that Arsenal are strongly interested in the Dutch hitman and were hoping to sign him this January.

However, Huntelaar’s representatives have now met with Schalke supervisory board chairman Clemens Tonnies to try and thrash out a deal, with Sky Sports saying the Bundesliga outfit are only offering him a two-year deal with Huntelaar holding out for three years.

But Tonnies has now revealed they have offered a compromise and urged the striker to commit his future to Schalke.

“I have offered a certain compromise, but I also said Klaas-Jan has to quickly decide in favour of Schalke, otherwise we would do better to end those talks.” Tonnies is quoted as saying by Sky Sports

The player himself has confirmed that his agent, Arnold Oosterver, has met the club recently but refused to reveal any further details of what was discussed. He said:

“It is true, Arnold [Oosterver, Huntelaar’s agent] was at Veltins-Arena lately. An important meeting has taken place. However, I am not able to say more on it right now.” Huntelaar is quoted as saying by Sky Sports

So after weeks of speculation it seems like Schalke have made a last ditch attempt to keep hold of Huntelaar. Let’s hope the striker turns it down as he’d be an excellent signing if we could lure him to the Emirates.

We are in desperate need of another forward and players with the quality of the former Real Madrid man don’t become available very often. So if he does decide to turn down their contract offer and Schalke decide to cash-in next month, I’d love to see Wenger make a move for him.

There is still hope, so let’s see how things progress over the next few weeks.
