Transfer News: De Gea Out, Reina In?

By  Published: 7th January 2013

With the January transfer window now open for business we’ll be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer gossip. Today, are Man Utd going to change their goalkeeper?

De Gea Man Utd Goalkeeper

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to sell David De Gea and buy a new goalkeeper this month with Liverpool’s Pepe Reina a target, according to the Mirror.

The report claims that Ferguson has asked David Gill and the club’s American owners to provide funds for a new No.1, and the Scot is understood to be keen to find a goalkeeper who can play in the Champions League during the second half of the season.

De Gea moved to United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and while his talent as a shot stopper can’t be questioned, there have been concerns over his ability to handle the physical aspect of Premier League football with many opposition teams targeting him – particularly at set pieces.

It looks like Fergie isn’t convinced who his best goalkeeper is this season as he’s chopped and changed De Gea and Lindegaard all year, with the Spaniard starting 13 games to Lindegaard’s 8.

The Mirror claim this uncertainty has lead to United supremos holding serious discussions about selling De Gea and bringing in a new No.1, with Liverpool’s Pepe Reina and Stoke’s Asmir Begovic both understood to be under consideration, with both keeper’s able to play in Europe.

Personally, I’m not sure what to make of this transfer gossip. On one hand, it seems highly unlikely that Fergie would ditch the young Spaniard only 18 months after paying big-bucks to bring him to Old Trafford. I mean De Gea hasn’t been that bad that he deserves the boot already.

But then again, you just never know with Ferguson. He can be ruthless at times and a club like United need an established first choice goalkeeper and if Fergie isn’t convinced De Gea is the man for the job, he could very well be out the door.

But a move for Reina? I just don’t see it. The Mirror claim his future is ‘uncertain’ at Anfield but if he does leave I’d eat my hat if he end’s up at United! Begovic seems far more likely to me.

What do you think…should Ferguson sell De Gea? Would he go for Reina? Get involved in the comments section below.

For other clubs, 20m for Reina, but since it’s Man Utd, 30m, Ferguson might just be dumb enough to bite.

Nope.Make it 35m, 5m for the remarks he made about how LFC handled Michael Owens. Must be getting forgetful seeing that Carra and Stevie G gave been playing atLFC through out their career without having the same problem. SG runs much more in a game than MC would.

Reina isn’t up to Man united’s standard. He’s too prone to errors and not too tall 4 a traditional no. 1. De Gea wil get better and take over from Casillas.

Someone is taking the piss right? De Gea is the best shot stopper (not goalie) in the league at just 22 and he is going to sell him and buy an error prone, on the decline keeper? im sorry but if this happens i think Fergie might be sacked the next morning. Not a United or liverpool fan but if anyone believes reina is still premier league standard then they have those red-tinted glasses on.

De Gea is rubbish. A great shot stopper is not the same as a great goalkeeper (remember Fabian Barthez?). De Gea’s positioning is suspect and he does not command his 6-yard box. Reina is also not that great. Krul, Vorm, Given, Friedel, Al Habsi, Mignolet are all better choices over Reina and De Gea, just to name a few. Even Arsenal, for once (since Seaman) and after a long long time, has a better goalkeeper than Man U!
