Some interesting news regarding the future of Loic Remy this morning with the Independent reporting that Arsenal have made a late move to sign the striker.

The report suggests boss Arsene Wenger has identified the 26-year-old as the striker he needs to overhaul Tottenham and Chelsea in the Premier League table and is ready to make his move in a deal that could be worth in the region of £10 million.

The newspaper claims the Marseille hitman has attracted interest from the likes of Queens Park Rangers, Newcastle, Schalke and Inter Milan during this transfer window but the Gunners are now considered as favourites after throwing their hat into the ring.

According to the Independent, Marseille are prepared to sell Remy this month and suggest it’s now a two-way fight between Arsenal and Newcastle for the French international after Harry Redknapp was unable to lure the striker to QPR after flying to France last weekend to try and secure a deal.

Remy is understood to be willing to remain with Marseille for the rest of the season but the news of Arsenal’s interest may change things, with the striker believed to be a boyhood Gooner.

This is an interesting piece of news if true. With Marouane Chamakh loaned to West Ham for the rest of the season I think we could certainly do with bringing in another striker this month, but is Remy the best option?

He’s scored 39 goals in his 95 appearances for Marseille since making the move from Nice in 2010, which is a decent return, but it’s not jaw-dropping. He’s struggled with injury this season and has only made 8 league appearances so far and has failed to find the net, so he’s hardly in red-hot form either.

But I wouldn’t be too unhappy if Remy was to make the move to north London this month. He’d give us another option up top and can play on the wing’s if needed. Let’s see how this develops in the coming days.
