Manchester United look set to beat Arsenal and Tottenham to the signing of Wilfried Zaha after manager Sir Alex Ferguson met with the player after agreeing a deal with Crystal Palace, according to the Mirror.

The report claims the young winger was given permission to meet up with Ferguson and discuss the move in a London hotel on Sunday night following United’s 1-1 draw with Tottenaham at White Hart Lane after United agreed a £15m deal with the Championship outfit.

The Mirror claim Arsenal and Tottenham are also interested in the 20-year-old attacker but it seems he’s bound for Old Trafford after United agreed to pay £10m up front with a further £5m in add ons.

The newspaper understands Zaha – who’s believed to be a boyhood Arsenal fan – is happy to go to United and the final detail to be decided is whether he will return to Palace on loan for the rest of the season.

I’ve said many times during this whole transfer ‘saga’ that whoever ends up signing Zaha should allow him to go back on loan to Palace for the rest of the season. It appears United are the team that’s won the race and it would make sense for Ferguson to allow him to complete the current campaign in the Championship before joining up with his new team mates in the summer.

It’s never easy to join a new team in January and the youngster is unlikely to get a lot of playing time at Old Trafford just yet. So I feel he should return to Palace, continue to play regular first team football in the coming months and then link up with United at the end of the season.

But the deal isn’t signed, sealed and delivered just yet, so United fans should wait for official confirmation before rushing out and buying their Zaha shirts.
