Manchester United are lining up a last ditch move for Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama, according to the local news reports in Manchester.

The Kenyan enforcer has been in superb form north of the border since moving to Glasgow from Belgian outfit Beerschot in 2011. The Manchester Evening News claims that Arsenal and United are interested in the midfielder with the Premier League leaders understood to be weighing up a late move before the transfer window closes on Thursday night.

The report suggests Sir Alex Ferguson has sent brother and scout Martin Ferguson to run-the-rule over the 21-year-old on several occasions this season while the United boss also made a personal check on the player last week during Celtic’s win over Dundee United.

That performance looks to have finally persuaded Ferguson to make his move with the MEN newspaper claiming United will try to persuade Celtic to do business before the end of the month, with the SPL champions understood to value Wanyama at around £10m.

Parkhead boss Neil Lennon is desperate to keep hold of the Kenyan international, particularly with Celtic’s Champions League last 16 double-header with Juventus on the horizon, but Kenyan FA president Sam Nyamweya claims Wanyama will soon join one of the world’s top clubs.

“Wanyama will soon be joining one of the big two clubs in the world,” he said.

“It is an exciting moment for us, which means that Kenya is a powerhouse in football.” Nyamweya is quoted as saying in the Manchester Evening News

I’ve watched Wanyama on several occasions this season and he’s been hugely impressive, especially during Celtic’s historic win over Barcelona when the player was immense. He reminded me of Michael Essien in his prime.

At just 21, he’s also got plenty of time to develop further so if United do manage to sign him, I think it will be a superb piece of business. However, I think Arsenal would do well to rival United for his signature as I think he’s exactly the type of physical presence the Gunners have missed in midfield in recent years.
