Chelsea Eye Late Move For Begovic
Chelsea are weighing up a late deadline day move for Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic as they look for a reliable stopper to push Petr Cech for the No.1 jersey, according to the Daily Mail.
Begovic has been in superb form between the sticks this season and has helped Stoke keep 9 clean sheets so far this campaign. There has been increased speculation over the Bosnian’s future in recent weeks with the Daily Mail claiming he has attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United.
However, the report suggests the Blues are lining up a deadline day move for the 25-year-old as they want to bring in a keeper who can deputise for Petr Cech at Stamford Bridge. Current No.2 Ross Turnbull has drawn criticism from some sections of fans this season and has only kept 2 clean sheets in 19 appearances for Chelsea.
The European champions have impressive youngster Thibaut Courtois on the books but the Mail claim he will be used as bait to try and land Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid in the summer, so the Blues are understood to have lined up Begovic as a top-drawer back-up to Cech.
Stoke will be desperate to keep hold of Begovic and the player himself seemed confident he would still be at the Britannia when the window slams shut at 11pm tonight, telling Sky Sports News on Thursday morning:
‘As far as I know (I am staying at Stoke) yes,’
‘I’m in for training today so I’m looking forward to staying and looking forward to the game at the weekend.
‘I don’t see anything happening now. I think that time’s passed. I’m just concentrating on what I need to do here.’ Begovic told Sky Sports according to the Mail
Will Chelsea be able to get a deal over the line in time if they do make a late move? Will Man Utd be forced to enter the bidding? With just hours remaining of the January transfer window, we don’t have long to wait until we find out….
