Wenger Confirms He Was Close To Making A Second Signing

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he came close to making another signing on transfer deadline day but the selling club refused to part with the player, according to Arsenal.com.

We’ve been linked with a whole host of names over the last few weeks but the only addition to the squad was the surprise signing of Spanish full-back Nacho Monreal, who sealed a move to the Emirates just before Thursday’s 11pm deadline.

The 26-year-old was signed as cover for the injured Kieran Gibbs, who now faces up to six weeks on the sidelines with a thigh injury picked up against Liverpool.

However, speaking at his press conference ahead of this weekends clash with Stoke, Wenger told the clubs official website that he was close to making a further addition to his squad but was denied as the selling club refused to sell the player.

“We were close to one more signature,” Wenger said. “It did not happen because of the desire of the clubs to sell or not sell. It is only linked with that.

“It was not a money problem, it was more a desire from other clubs to keep their players.

“I believe that we have top quality in our squad and that is what we want to show until the end of the season.

“We have some aspects of our game that we need to improve and how active we will be in the market in the summer will be decided by how well we do now until the end of the season.”

Arsene couldn’t reveal the name of the player for obvious reasons but many fans are speculating who this mystery target was. Many are pointing to David Villa, others are suggesting names like Etienne Capoue, while some more cynical supports are claiming the boss is making it up to appease fans who’re frustrated at the lack of signings. I suppose we may never find out the truth.

But at least the one signing we did secure looks to be a decent buy and a vital one now that Gibbs has been ruled out for six weeks.  It remains to be seen whether Monreal will be handed his debut on Saturday but with Vermaelen a doubt for the game, let’s hope he is as otherwise it means….Santos!

Were you disappointed with Arsenal’s lack of transfer activity? Who do you think was the mystery player we missed out on?

More rubbish from Wenger – if the club he supposedly approached (on the last day)
didn’t want to sell, then he wasn’t close to signing anyone. I suspect we would have signed no-one at all if Gibbs hadn’t been injured. As long as he thinks we have enough players in our (paper thin) squad then he won’t make any purchases.

Are you guys just wenger bashing for the sake of it? He is telling the truth…….there was news reports everywhere that we were trying to force Barca’s hands for David Villa, and he wanted to come but the gits at Barca refused him.

You can tell by his comments and him saying that it was the club holding us back that it was Villa, but he can’t mention names because he will land Arsenal in trouble for ‘unsettling a player’ funny though how Barca have stolen all our players owe us a tonne of money and yet dont want to give us a player they are not even really utilising. They are bunch of scumbags…….arrogant scum!!

Was Villa really going to leave his 2 day old child and wife to come here ? I don’t really think so. It seems to me that Villa may be using Arsenal to put pressure on barcelona for more playing time, and Wenger may well be using Villa’s name to impress us fans. There were other players out there that Wenger could have better spent his time pursuing but he chose not to or, as usual, left it too late and they went elsewhere

He was coming regardless, he wanted to leave but barca didn’t want to sell. The birth would have made things tricky but they would have moved because Villa’s career is going down the pan because he is not getting games……but i think we have a deal in place for him in the summer which probably ideally would be best for both parties……scoring goals is not the issue the issue is our LB options and Monreal is a LOT better than gibbs, on a par if not better tha Baines. Because he is not hugely known unless you follow Malaga you’d quickly realise just dow damn good this player is most people are already touting him the signing of the window he is THAT GOOD!!

I have already said he was not going to sign anyone. I already know his trickery. All serious clubs bought players and did not wait for closing day, he was just buying time trust me. He insults the intelligence of supporters. I can assure you Arsenal will only change when Arsen leaves. He already hinted that summer signing will be considered depending on the performance of his current squad, so you get the message, he will never sign as he is happy with the performance of his backline, goalkeeper leaking, no defensive midfielder. Bring a new coach and the first thing he will do is to stregthen the squad. The bid for Capoue is green lie, why can’t he pay 14 million, and he also cant pay 3,5 million for Diame instead like an old crock he sits and critisize other clubs like Newcastle when they buy. Whose money is it that he doesn’t want to spend?Kroenke is a businessman, Wenger is supposed to be afootball manager who must demand cash for players, who is is fooling who, its disgusting. Even if Arsenal gets top 4, it is not sustainable and will not win trophies, when is Arsenal going to plot the premier league top spot or to win the Cahnpions leaugue? certainly he’s got no ambition anymore, now you know why RVP left ( he loved Arsenal but was frustrated by this stubborn man), i have lost faith and can’t trust him anymore, he was not going to sign save for Gibs injury.Arsenal fans will have to wait for 2014 when Arsense contracts expires unfortunately.

we all know what mr wengers all about its a shame he feels he needs to play mind games with the supporters to grab attention for himself
The Arsenal signing was good because it fell within their budget and he is a good player lets hope he is for arsenal so many good player have come and gone ,but i strongly believe wengers building for next season and is clearly pushing for champions league football he is not going to get it easy if at all this season not with the way the present arsenal team are playimg a team of halfs
