Leandro Damiao has welcomed interest from Tottenham but insists he is happy at Internacional and wants to stay with the club for for years to come, according to Sky Sports News.

The report claims Tottenham have been long-term admirers of the 23-year-old and were understood to have failed with a late bid to land the striker during the January transfer window.

Damiao has now come out and thanked the north Londoners for their interest but insists he has no intention of leaving Internacional any time soon:

“[Internacional’s] president Giovanni Luigi knows I always wanted to stay at Internacional, regardless of any offers that could come,”

“I certainly thank Tottenham [for their interest], they are a big club in Europe, but my focus is on Inter.

“I hope to help Inter for a long time, I have a long contract and I am very happy and focused.” Damiao is quoted as saying by Sky Sports

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas confirmed on Sunday that the club tried to sign the Brazilian international hitman but revealed it was the players complicated ownership rights situation, with his former club Atletico Ibirama still owning a percentage of him, that made a deal difficult.

“It wasn’t something we just did on the last day of the window. Third party ownership makes it difficult to do,” AVB is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News

With 75 goals in 131 appearances for Internacional so far in his career, Tottenham fans may be slightly disappointed the club couldn’t agree a deal to sign the South American forward last month, especially given the fact Villas-Boas is facing a striker shortage after Jermain Defoe picked up an injury on Sunday.

But it seems the player is happy where he is and with Brazil hosting the World Cup in 2014, who would blame him if he wanted to remain in his homeland until then?!
