Bacary Sagna Responds To PSG Rumours

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has denied speculation claiming he had spoken to Paris St Germain over a possible move to the club in January, according to reports

Despite the transfer window now being closed there will still be plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Bacary Sagna has responded to reports linking him with PSG.

Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has denied speculation claiming he had spoken to Paris St Germain over a possible move to the club in January, according to Sky Sports News.

The right-back has less than 18 months left to run on his current contract at the Emirates and reports last month suggested Sagna was unhappy at only being offered a one-year extension by the club.

This has lead to speculation suggesting he could be the next high-profile name we see leave Arsenal with the Telegraph claiming French giants PSG are among the clubs interested in luring him away.

However, Sagna has responded to the reports by insisting he has not had contact with anyone at PSG and he remains fully committed to seeing out his contract with Arsenal. He’s quoted by Sky Sports as saying:

“The January transfer rumours regarding PSG? I am 100 per cent devoted to my club,”

“I am only thinking about defending the colours of Arsenal until the end of my contract.

“The fans are angry with me because they heard about PSG’s interest, but I am not responsible for that. I have never had any contact.”

It’s good to hear Bacary say he’s fully committed to the club but the interesting part for me is that he says “until the end of my contract”. At no time does he suggest he wants to extend his stay beyond that or renew his current deal.

The Frenchman has been a superb custodian for Arsenal since joining the club from Auxerre back in 2007 and has been one of our most consistent performers during his 225 appearances. But he turns 30 next week and his next contract is likely to be his last big pay-day, so I’m afraid I can’t see him accepting a one-year extension if that’s all we’re going to offer him. So I think we’ll see Bac move on in the summer unfortunately.
