Chelsea have opened talks with Frank Lampard over a new deal after a sensational U-turn by owner Roman Abramovich, according to the Daily Mail.

Lampard looked set to leave Chelsea when his contract expires in the summer after reportedly being told he wouldn’t be offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

However, the 34-year-old has been in excellent form in recent months after recovering from a calf injury that hampered him during the first half of the season and he has now scored 10 goals in just 17 Premier League appearances, as well as scoring the winner for England in a 2-1 win over Brazil on Wednesday night.

Chelsea fans have been begging owner Abramovich to back down and offer Lampard a new deal as they did with Ashley Cole and it seems they may just get their wish.

The Daily Mail claim that the Russian billionaire has had a change of heart and opened preliminary talks with the midfielder over a new deal last week, with initial talks said to be ‘positive’ and the club will now follow up with a firm offer.

The report suggests the player isn’t short of offers from overseas with the likes of PSG and LA Galaxy said to be interested, but Lampard has always maintained he wants to extend his 12-year stay at Chelsea as he closes in on Bobby Tambling’s goal-scoring record of 202 goals, so it would be no surprise if a deal was agreed with the Blues.

It was noble of Chelsea to try and freshen up their squad with younger players but you can’t hide from the fact that veterans like Cole and Lampard still have plenty to offer even if they are the wrong side of 30. It would be criminal to let an asset like Lamps leave for nothing and I fully expect the midfielder to sign an extension with the Blues – if the club have any sense.
