Arsenal Open Talks With Barcelona Over £22m Double Deal?

By on February 20, 2013

Despite the transfer window now being closed there will still be plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal are linked with a double raid on Barcelona.

David Villa Barcelona

Arsenal have opened talks with Spanish giants Barcelona over the potential double signing of David Villa and Victor Valdes, according to talkSPORT.

As many Gooners will no doubt remember, we were strongly linked with a move for Villa during the January transfer window with reports suggesting we had made several attempts to try and persuade Barca into letting him move to north London. However, the Catalans were understood to have blocked the move and the 31-year-old remained in La Liga for the rest of the season.

Goalkeeper Valdes announced recently that he is set to end his 20-year stint at the Nou Camp after revealing he won’t be renewing his contract – which is set to expire in 2014.

talkSPORT cite reports coming out of Spain on Wednesday that claim Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has opened talks with Barcelona over the duo with the Frenchman prepared to pay in excess of £22m to land the Spanish pair at the end of the season.

The report suggests the boss has renewed his interest in striker Villa as he looks to add to his strikeforce in the summer while it also claims that Wojciech Szczesny’s place as No.1 is under threat with Arsene understood to want an experienced stopper to compete with the young Pole, and Valdes is believed to be of interest.

I was all for Villa signing in January but I feel there may be better, and younger, targets to go for in the summer. Villa is entering the final years of his career and is starting to pick up injuries, so I’d prefer we looked at more long-term options.

Valdes is a decent keeper but I don’t see him as a huge step-up from Szczesny. If we’re going to bring in a new number one we need to make sure he’s a proper top drawer keeper and I don’t feel Valdes fits the bill.

But would I be devastated if we ended up signing Villa and Valdes in the summer? No, of course not. I just feel our money could be better spent, but the summer is a long way off yet so let’s see how things develop over the coming months.

Would you like to see Villa and Valdes signed? If not, who would you prefer? Get involved in the comments section below.

I dare to differ. Valdez in one of the three top goalies in the world, so he would contribute enormously with experience to the team. Villa is in his last years but he has the ability to break through and score with a team that plays similar to Arsenal, so he can fit in easily. That fact is that every time he is brought on he scores. It was tough on him that Barca did not let him go, arrogance I would say, as he is prepared to eventually retire having been one of the top scorers in the world and leave with a bang! His ability to score against teams that defend with 10 players is what we need at this moment. He is the man for the next 2 years.

What on earth is dis crap? Barca comes around every season to buy our best players, and in return we go for their finished products, for goodness sakes, go for begovic from stoke city and movable from fiorentina……..best value for money. But again, at arsenal, the fans Never get their wish!

I agree Villa will not be able to play at the top class Arsenal need to help us wwin trophies again. Valdes is not a good keeper. His record is good because Barca are very good at defending. I do not see Valdes that much but every match I have seen him play he makes a mistake that cost a goal, or could have done just much better with the shot that resulted in the goal. Makes to many mistakes, would be no different from Szec.

Here we go again. Another Santos-Mertesacker combo?
What good did that do? Wenger is really finished if that is true he plans to buy Barcas rejects when he would not spend to help team.Am disappointed.

What goalies like Valdes, Degea are so highly rated is not only their shot-stopping rate but also their ball distribution which is so much important for teams playing from the back.
    Szczesny’s distribution is really poor

No matter what I think or say will make any difference at Arsenal nor will the opinions of the payees. If I lived in London I would do exactly the same as I do in Australia, watch them on TV..there is no way my pension money would be spent in support of a manager on 7 million a year and an average winger on 100K a week. You`ve got to have rocks in your head.
I`m one of the lucky ones who remembers the early post war years at Highbury.

If this rumour is true then I’d say Wenger is just a fool. I can’t imagine him going after players that are no more needed in a club when he should go and drag (with other coaches) for players of great significance. Going by the way I see Arsenal being run, am certain within the next 5years, Wolves FC will be greater.

Arsenal must secure services of Villa, Jovetic, Valdez and Amborietta and that honestly should suffice as Arsenal have the likes of the reserves who have the talent to take to the ‘world stage’ as in the persons …. Aisfeld, Apkom, Gnabrt, Ryo, Campbell!

@Roland, David villa of 2years bck isn’t d same villa of today. Hav u seen d guy play lately? He’s a total mess, lost his pace, can’t dribble anymore, it’s a no-brainer dat he warms d bench at barca. Av got dis feeling though, dat d next transfer btw barca and arsenal will be that of wilshere, cos d barca I saw yesterday were totally clueless, Xavi was outclassed in d midfield, and Cesc was no where to be found. I wish for once, arnal and wenger can take a clue on “defending 101″. Milan were totally amazing, and at a point I saw el sharawwy runnin frm over 60yards to defend a loose ball, and den I said to myself, “are dis arsenal players too lazy”????

i have always said and will continue to share that same opinion that considering players who are above 30 yrs is like telling the totality of the fans that you do not have anything more to offer.there are far more young and enterprising stars all over the globe and if it means spending extra to secure their services why not, after all if it guarantees us success by reason of getting our hands on trophies once again thats fine and good. stop feeding us with these stories of looking at signing old players.

i beleve we need new keeper but dont think its valdes!we should look at someone whos younger than 30 he then has 3/4 good years left at least, and villa i dont see point in someone whos injury prone and ageing,i do rather we go for vorn(swansea)or raine(pool)as for forward id much rather see jovetic.

Arsene wenger should not buy any player above 28 years old. So they can still play Good football before their prime.

    February 21, 2013 at 1:01 pm

Players past 28 are past their prime? I guess nobody told Juve that when they bought Pirlo or Man UTD when they bought V.Persie. We need experience players like Eisfield and Gnabry, however much talent they have will not bring what the team needs to win a trophey let alone a trophy. hopefully with the dead wood leaving and the new deals coming through Arsene should be able to spend. But the problem as always is who can we afford to buy that teams like City and Chelsea cant out bid and over pay.

Am I the only one who sees that Szczesny is sh*t. He is a decent shot stopper but can not distribute the ball, has no command of the box and suffers from adhd. Someone above mentioned that we need a younger option but I say no we need a man in net not a boy. A goalie can play well into his 30′s so Valdes has a least 5 good years in him. He is also use to playing with a possession based team like we play. BRING ON VALDES…please.

Lets sort this mess out in defence arsenal need to defence like a team not just four in the back we need all the team to help the b ack four look at Man U man c maillan they r all as good as arsenal going fourword but the they all come back to help the defence we won’t get nowhere if we play like this simple I am surprised wenger and mr buodly can’t see this problem this team has got every thing that u drame of but crap defence
