Sagna Set For Exit As Wenger Gears Up For Busy Summer

Defender Bacary Sagna is set to be the big-name departure at the end of the season as boss Arsene Wenger plans a busy summer of change at the Emirates Stadium.

Despite the transfer window now being closed there will still be plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Bacary Sagna is set to leave Arsenal.

Bacary Sagna is set to be the big-name departure at the end of the season as boss Arsene Wenger plans a busy summer of change at the Emirates, according to the Guardian.

Sagna has been with the club for six years and has rightly earned himself a reputation for being ‘Mr. Consistency’ due to his reliability at right back. However, his form has dipped this season after suffering two broken legs last year and his place in the team has come under scrutiny by some sections of the Emirates faithful.

The 30-year-old’s contract is due to expire in 2014 and the Guardian claim he’s expected to leave in the summer after being disappointed that the club has only offered him a one-year extension.

The report claims Arsenal are concerned over his long-term fitness so have decided to follow their approach of only offering players over 30 one-year extensions, and Sagna now looks set to be sold in the summer with PSG mooted as a possible destination.

His departure is expected to front a summer of change at the Emirates with the Guardian claiming boss Arsene Wenger has instructed chief scout Steve Rowley to draw up a list of potential replacements for Sagna as well as continue to monitor targets such as David Villa, Etienne Capoue, Victor Wanyama and Pepe Reina during the second half of the season.

The newspaper suggests fringe players will be moved on to free up space in the squad for new signings with players like Nicklas Bendtner, Andrey Arshavin, Sebastien Squillaci, Lukasz Fabianski and Denilson all expected to be off the wage bill on a permanent basis.

Sagna’s departure will be a blow to the club as he’s been a terrific servant, despite his recent dip in form. He’s still a top right back on his day and it’s going to be difficult to fill the void if he does in fact go. I’m not convinced Carl Jenkinson is ready to command a first team spot just yet so I’d like to see an experienced full-back come in to replace Bac in the summer.
