Jose-Mourinho

Chelsea legend Ruud Gullit has told talkSPORT that Rafa Benitez’s objective for the season is to qualify for the Champions League then step aside for Jose Mourinho to return to the club.

Mourinho spent a hugely successful three years at Chelsea between 2004 and 2007, winning two Premier League titles and three domestic cups. The current Real Madrid boss has been strongly linked with a return to Stamford Bridge in recent months with the 50-year-old tipped to leave the Bernabeu this summer.

Rafa Benitez was installed as interim coach at Chelsea following the departure of Roberto Di Matteo last November  but according to former Blues midfielder Gullit, the Spaniard is simply keeping the seat warm for the return of Mourinho.

Gullit told talkSPORT that Benitez’s objective when hired by Roman Abramovich was to ensure Chelsea qualified for the Champions League next season before making way for Mourinho in the summer, and even claims that ‘The Special One’ was due to return to the Bridge last season but plans were scuppered when the Blues won the Champions League making it difficult to sack then boss Roberto Di Matteo.

“Rafa Benitez’s main objective this season is to qualify for the Champions League and then to make way for Jose Mourinho, I have a gut feeling that Mourinho will come back to Chelsea.”

“I have a feeling that he was meant to come back after the Champions League final but then when Chelsea won it I think he thought better of it. It’s no coincidence that right after the final he signed a new contract with Real Madrid.”

A return to Chelsea for Mourinho would surely go down well with the Stamford Bridge faithful as the Portuguese boss is still a huge fan-favourite in west London, so no doubt they’ll be hoping Gullit’s ‘feeling’ turns out to be accurate.
