Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson has told Arsenal.com that he feels ‘distraught’ following the clubs 2-1 loss to Tottenham on Sunday and believes his side were unlucky to lose the game.

Jenkinson, a boyhood Arsenal fan, put in a solid display at right-back after filling in for the injured Bacary Sagna but the 21-year-old couldn’t stop the hosts scoring two quick-fire goals before half-time to take control of the game after the visitors had made a promising start.

Per Mertesacker pulled one back shortly after the break but Arsenal couldn’t force the equaliser and are now seven-points behind their rivals with 10 games to go and now face an up-hill battle to secure Champions League qualification next season, with Arsene Wenger’s side now relying on Tottenham and/or Chelsea to drop points in the run-in.

Jenkinson has now told the clubs official website that he’s been left distraught by the defeat and doesn’t feel Arsenal deserved to lose the game:

“I’m distraught, to be honest,” Jenkinson told Arsenal Player. “I don’t feel like we deserved to lose. We had chances and have the team and the ability to come here and win. It just didn’t happen.

“I think we had a good share of the game. There were times where we really had them on the back foot and they didn’t look threatening at all. I think we used the flanks well. We were getting wide and getting crosses in. It just wasn’t meant to be.

“I know the importance [of the derby]. In the history, we’ve always tended to come out on top and today it wasn’t our day. We beat them at home and they beat us at their place. But it’s really disappointing that we haven’t at least picked up a point.”

The Gunners now have two weeks off before their next game – Swansea away – meaning Tottenham and Chelsea have the chance to extend the gap even further this weekend, but Jenkinson says it’s now time to put the Spurs defeat behind them and concentrate on finishing the season well. He continued:

“There are 10 games left and there are plenty of points to play for,” he said. “I think in a couple of days time, we’ll get our head around this and realise that we’ve bridged a gap like that before and can do it again.

“We will be positive and we will come back from this. Tottenham are our rivals but we’ll get over it, we’ll be positive. We’ve just got to work our socks off because we need to be in that top four at the bare minimum.” Jenkinson told Arsenal.com
