Mourinho To Replace Rafa This Month?

Jose-Mourinho

Jose Mourinho could replace Rafa Benitez as Chelsea boss as early as this month if Real Madrid are knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester United on Wednesday night, according to the Daily Star.

The report claims the Portuguese boss remains unhappy at the Bernabeu, despite improved performances on the pitch in recent weeks, and feels he’s lost the support of the players and the club’s hierarchy to the extent that should Madrid lose to United tonight, it could see Mourinho leave Madrid in the coming weeks.

Real beat Barcelona 2-1 on Saturday but remain 13 points adrift of the league leaders so are almost certainly going to relinquish their La Liga title this season. The Champions League is therefore the priority and failure to progress to the quarter finals would leave the Spanish giants with very little left to play for this season, so an early change in management isn’t totally out of the question.

The Star claim that Mourinho and Abramovich have repaired their frosty relationship with the pair understood to be in regular contact these days, and the 50-year-old boss is already preparing for a possible return to life in London after buying a house in the capital while his daughter is attending Camberwell Arts College.

Chelsea have endured a difficult season but remain on course to qualify for the Champions League after beating West Brom 1-0 on Saturday, but Rafa Benitez has already confirmed he’ll leave the club in the summer.

The Star’s report seems a little speculative if you ask me. They’re basically saying Mourinho ‘could‘ leave Madrid and ‘could‘ take over at Stamford Bridge with very little evidence to back up these claims. That’s not to say it may not happen of course, and I’m sure the majority of Chelsea fans would love to see ‘The Special One’ come in to replace Benitez as soon as possible, but I feel there is still a long way to go before it happens.
