Manchester United will try to get over the disappointment of Tuesday’s controversial Champions League exit to Real Madrid as they welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford this Sunday for their FA Cup quarter final.

Sir Alex Ferguson held his press conference at Carrington on Friday morning and gave ManUtd.com a team news and injury update ahead of the game with the latest on Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Phil Jones.

There was much talk in the newspapers this week about the future of Rooney after he was left out against Madrid but Ferguson insists the striker will be staying at Old Trafford and confirmed to the clubs official website that he’ll be involved on Sunday, but stopped short of confirming whether that will be from the start or not:

“Wayne will be here next year,” he promised. “You have my word on that. I have no issues at all with the player and he’ll be involved on Sunday.” Ferguson told ManUtd.com

Ferguson also confirmed that defender Phil Jones is still out with an ankle injury that he picked up against Reading last month, but is confident he’ll be back next week. Ryan Giggs will also miss the Chelsea game with Ferguson keen to rest the 39 year-old after his impressive display against Madrid. Fergie continued:

“Phil Jones won’t be ready for Sunday but he’ll be ready for the following week. He’s done some good bits of training now but he won’t be ready for Sunday. Everybody else came through Tuesday, which is good.

“Ryan Giggs won’t play on Sunday. Why? Because he was the best player we had on Tuesday and we know how to look after him. We know how to prepare him for certain games and now he won’t play on Sunday. He’s done his bit for us. Next week is a different game. He’ll get more rest and then we can prepare him for that one.

“When you have the squad that we have… goodness me, I left out Shinji Kagawa who scored a hat-trick, and nobody mentioned that. I thought I might get more criticism for that.”

Otherwise Fergie has a fully-fit squad to choose from meaning the likes of Jonny Evans, Javier Hernandez and Shinji Kagawa will hope to be involved this weekend after missing out midweek.
