[Player Ratings] Bayern Munich 0-2 Arsenal: A Heroic Failure As Pride Is Restored

By on March 13, 2013

Laurent Koscielny

Arsenal put in a superb performance, particularly at the back, to beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in their own back yard. Sadly, it wasn’t enough and we crashed out of the Champions League on the away goals rule.

Olivier Giroud gave us the perfect start as he tapped home Theo Walcott’s low cross to grab a vital early goal after just three minutes, and Laurent Koscielny ensured it was a nervy last 5 minutes after heading home a second late on, but we couldn’t find the third we needed and Bayern progressed on away goals.

We were excellent at the back, the whole back five were superb and deserve to stick together at least for Swansea away on Saturday. We were pretty average going forward and didn’t create too much. We struggled to keep hold of the ball in the final third, which was frustrating. You get the feeling if we were really on our game Bayern were there for the taking. Dare i say Jack Wilshere could have made the difference? We’ll never know, but it was a superb effort from the lads and pride has certainly been restored.

Arsenal Ratings

Fabianski – 8 – Excellent return. Nobody predicted Fabianski would come in after a year out the first team and put in a performance like this and keep Bayern at bay. Deserves to keep his place for the weekend.

Jenkinson – 8 – Superb. Dealt with the ‘tricky’ Robben well and always gives his all for the team. Attitude typified when he bust a gut to close down Robben as he was clean through on goal and his presence put the Dutchman off.

Mertesacker – 8 – MUCH better from the big man. Was all over the place against Spurs but showed he’s capable of being a solid defender and put his body on the line when called upon.

Koscielny – 9 – Outstanding. MOTM by a mile. He marshalled the back line and took his goal well. Should definitely keep his place.

Gibbs – 8 – Another excellent display from the final member of the back five. Solid return from Gibbsy after six weeks out and kept Muller quiet.

Arteta – 6 – Steady shift from Mikel but lost the plot in the final few minutes giving away a series of needless, and frustrating, fouls. Still not the athletic ball-winner we need protecting the back-four but he always gives his best for the team.

Ramsey – 6 – OK from Rambo. Gave away far too many cheap balls in the first half and didn’t really stamp his authority on the game. Subbed.

Rosicky – 6.5 – Started very poorly, passing out of play three times in the first 10 minutes, but settled in to the game and is still a driving force going forward and played his part in the opener with a clever lay-off to Walcott.

Cazorla – 6 – Very quiet from the little Spaniard, particularly in the second half. Saw little of the ball out on the left and didn’t fare much better when he was moved into the middle. Still showed little flashes of his brilliance when he was on the ball, but just didn’t happen enough.

Walcott – 5.5 – Great cross to find Giroud for the opener and almost found a team mate with another fizzing cross shortly after. But struggled to get into the game from then on and was eventually subbed.

Giroud – 6 – Was on hand to tap home the first from close range but was largely a frustrating game from the Frenchman. Couldn’t really get hold of the ball and fluffed a lay-off to Cazorla that would have given the midfielder a tap in.

Subs:

Gervinho – 6 – Went close with a neat bit of skill but his shot bobbled agonisingly wide.

Chamberlain – 6 – Couple of lively runs down the right but final ball let him down on occasion.

A special mention for the referee who was truly awful. Far too whistle happy and quick to get his cards out, and fell for the Germans ‘antics’ all night. You expect better at this level.

Overall, it was an excellent display from the team but unfortunately the damage was done in the first leg. We gave ourselves too much to do but nobody gave us a hope in the away leg and we proved that with a bit of organisation at the back, we’re capable of beating the best. Let’s use this as a springboard for the Premier League run-in.

Playing against a team that was already through its easy to play good football but when they had to preform in the immigrants stadium they bottled it. Joke of a team

Arsene should’ve started OX instead of Ramsey. Ox performed excellently against Milan last year in a similar game as today. Giroud hasn’t been in sync since he arrived perhaps he needs more time but i dont think he should be our leading striker, he is frustrating to watch.

“shot bobbled agonisingly wide” – this is a bit harsh on Gerv. I would say he gave a good effort trying to create something out of a difficult situation. If Giroud was a poacher that could’ve been a goal.

Kos was amazing today, i am not surprised, he was our best defender last year, not sure why he was benched this year.

Great team effort overall.A few very frustrating individual displays at times. It was clear to see that some defence work must have been done over 10 days rest.I felt the game was not only there for us to win but advance to the next stage.Imo we didnt advance because we gave ourselves to much work from the 1st leg and tonight there where far to many turned over balls in midfield and our attack went awol after the 1st goal.We won the game got knocked out but restored a little pride. We need to take this momentum into the final stage of the pl.

    Fabianski had a great game.
Back four was great. It’s our best back for in my opinion, also the same back four that started against City away early in the season.
Giroud is a top player. Maybe not the in and out goal scorer we all want but for someone many feel hasn’t settled yet or just hasn’t performed to the level required his stats for a first season in English football isn’t bad. Like many I would have like to have seen Ox play from the start.

Well I really think the Fact that Bayern had such a solid lead with 3 away goals that they did not come out strong this leg. They hardly got stuck in on 50/50 balls several times Arsenal played hospital balls that they won back with only a half hearted attempt from Bayern to win the ball. looking more interested in avoiding injury then challenging for a loose ball. And their attack with Robben was very one dimensional with most chances coming from shots form outside the 18 yard box. But on another day those shots could have been in and Fabianski made a few huge save to deny Robben on what by his standard should have been a goal. BUT Had Arsenal put a better game in the first leg I think this match would have been a much different game. Bayern went out expecting it take it easy and coast though to the next round. IN the end they did JUST enough to get through but as it has been seen before when a team goes in to a second leg with a string advantage it is Hard to turn it on once the opposition turns it around it is Really too bad Arsenal could not make them pay for their complacent approach to this match. Just a but more Quality in the final 3rd and Arsenal would have turned it all around and progressed.

This is how we must defend. From now on that’s how we defend. Sort out the front with a better and pacier striker and better communication. Get another pacy and athletic midfielder and we are all set. We need heart people and this game showed that!

Well great performance from arsenal, even tho the coach lost is senses every time, 65mins is enough to chang players but he will not do that. They all try and stop blaming Giroud cos he had no support feom the wing, we all no he love to see crossing coming in by then he can connect. And every one of you that bif fabiasky is not only about keeping, but ability to control and arrange your defense. And wenger should pls varmalen should be on the bench for christ sake.

Yesternight game was a wonderful night 4 d gooners we really appreciate all dier efforts my comments in2 dat game is as follows
Firstly Giroud should go n learn abt positioning he always forget himself anywhere he’s n he should also follow d trend of d game especially by following d movement of d wingers he has been making dis mistake nearly all d times
Secondly we used mass attack n mass defence wis l tink is suitable 4 us n our midfielders really support our defence n we use d same system during our game wit Suderland dis season n won. Pls Mr Wenger let’s continue wit dis formation 2 secure our top 4
Finally let Roscisky be involve in our remaining league matches n l’m 100%sure we are wining our remaining matches. I’ve said dis be4 our match wit Bayern by involving Roscisky or Arshavin n we won n d match
