Boss Fears Losing Captain To Arsenal Or Liverpool

Swansea City boss Michael Laudrup admits he fears losing captain Ashley Williams this summer amid reported interest from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool.

Despite the transfer window being closed there is still plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Michael Laudrup is concerned about losing Ashley Williams.

Ashley Williams

Swansea City boss Michael Laudrup admits he fears losing captain Ashley Williams this summer amid reported interest from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, according to Sky Sports News.

Williams has been superb at the heart of Swansea’s defence over the past 18 months as the Welsh outfit have cemented their Premier League status since being promoted in 2011. The centre-back has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders and lead the Swans to the League Cup last month with a comfortable 5-0 win over Bradford in the final at Wembley.

Sky Sports report that Arsenal are weighing up a summer bid for the 28-year-old while Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is also believed to be considering a move for his former skipper at the end of the season as he looks for a replacement for the retiring Jamie Carragher.

Swansea boss Laudrup has claimed he is powerless to stop the speculation and feels the reported interest just shows how well his players are performing on the pitch, but admits he’ll be disappointed to lose Williams or his defensive partner Chico in the summer:

“When there are rumours about these clubs wanting someone from here it is because the player has done well – and Ashley has,”

“What else can I do? I can’t call Arsenal and say ‘Is it true?’ – and I don’t think Arsene Wenger would answer anyway, he has other things to think about. It is just part of the game.

“We will have to cope with these stories and remember it means people have seen what we have done here and what the players have done.

“He and Chico [Flores, his fellow centre-half] have been a great pair. They are doing great together and I will be unhappy to lose that pairing for next season.” Laudrup is quoted as saying by Sky Sports

Williams has been outstanding this season so it’s little wonder he’s being touted for a summer move to the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool. Both clubs should be on the look-out for another centre-back this summer and they could do a lot worse than the Swansea captain.
