Arsenal appear to have been dealt a huge blow with Goal.com reporting that Jack Wilshere’s latest ankle injury is set to keep him on the sidelines for at least another six weeks.

The midfielder picked up the problem during the defeat to Tottenham two weeks ago and was sent to Dubai to rest for a week. Arsene Wenger confirmed the injury last week saying the 21-year-old had suffered a problem to his right ankle and would be out for 3 weeks but he hoped to have him back after the international break, telling Sky Sports:

“Wilshere has an inflamed ankle, the other ankle. He will be out for Bayern, Swansea and for England.

“Hopefully for the Premier League, he will only miss one game because of the international break.

“I noticed recently he has had to dig deep for us, it’s not welcome for us but he needed a breather.

“But it’s more preventative. We trust our people who are specialists.”

However, Goal.com claim the player has since had another scan which revealed the true extent of the problem and he has suffered a re-occurrence of the injury that plagued him for 16 months but to the other ankle and has been instructed to rest for six weeks.

If true, that would rule him out of our next six games and it would be the start of May before he’d be able to begin training again. While he could be rushed back to take part in our final three league games, Goal.com claim the that privately, the club have already ruled him out for the season.

If this report is accurate, it will be a major blow to our hopes of finishing in the top-four this season. The win at Swansea combined with Tottenham’s loss against Fulham has moved us to within four points of our rivals with a game in hand, but the loss of Wilshere would be a huge blow at this stage of the season.

I read reports on Twitter last week when the injury first came to light that suggested Wenger was playing down the injury and it was more serious than we thought, and it seems those rumours may have some foundation to them. Fingers crossed Goal.com have this one wrong but knowing our luck with injuries, this will be the rare occasion they get it right.
