Xabi Alonso has turned down the chance to sign a contract extension at Real Madrid opening the door to a potential return to former club Liverpool, according to the Express.

Alonso spent a hugely successful five seasons at Anfield between 2004-2009 before making a big-money move to the Bernabeu where he’s continued to impress at the heart of midfield.

The Express claims the 31-year-old has just over 14 months to run on his current Madrid contract but has thrown his future in to doubt after deciding not to renew his deal, despite the Spanish giants best efforts to persuade him to sign beyond 2014.  The newspaper quotes Spanish journalist, Josep Pedrerol, who confirmed the news:

“Xabi Alonso has decided not to renew with Real Madrid. [His current deal] ends in June 2014 and his contract will not be renewed.”

Alonso will be nearly 33 by the time his contract expires and Madrid will now have to decide whether to cash in this summer when they would still be able to command a decent fee or allow him to run down him contract and leave for nothing 12 months later.

The Express claim Madrid won’t stand in the players way if he want’s to leave and with Liverpool understood to still be big fans of the classy midfielders, it leaves the door open to a potential return to Anfield either this summer or in 2014.

Would love to see Alonso back at anfield but not if R Madrid slap an over exaggerated price on his head to try and get as much money for him as possible. Wouldn’t spend more than £9-10m for him as I think the money could be spent best elsewhere if they want more than that.
