[Player Ratings] WBA 1-2 Arsenal: Rosicky The Hero, Mertesacker The Zero

By on April 6, 2013

per mertesacker

A HUGE 3 points for Arsenal today. Tomas Rosicky put us in total control with a rare double but the sending off of Per Mertesacker, and resulting penalty goal from Morrison, made it an extremely nervy last 20 minutes. But we managed to hang on, just, and seal a vital three points. Here are my Arsenal player ratings from the game:

Arsenal Ratings

Fabianski – 6 – Seemed to be back to his ‘flappy’ best when he flapped at a few crosses during the game and kicking was poor but also showed his bravery on more than one occasion, throwing his body on the line to deny the hosts an opportunity. Also showed great hands to hold on to a Brunt free-kick in the first half.

Sagna – 6 – Poor delivery early on in the first half, he really needs to work on his delivery. Had a great chance to make it 2-0 just after the break but Foster saved and was given a tough time by Lukaku when he was introduced.

Mertesacker – 4 – Was looking comfortable but then seemed to collapse under the pressure when WBA switched to 3 forwards. First he put Koscielny in trouble with a sloppy pass just minutes before he almost cost us the three points when he was caught out of position and was forced to haul down Long in the box. Gave Webb no choice but to show the red card.

Koscielny – 7 – Stayed strong at the back when we were under intense pressure during the final stages and made an incredible 11 clearances during the game.

Monreal – 7 – Was enjoying himself down the left when we were on top and showed his disciplined side when we were under the cosh late on. Great January signing.

Arteta – 7.5 – Was excellent in the first half when his work rate was exceptional, but he seemed to tire in the second half.

Ramsey – 6.5 – Poor tackle on Thomas saw him booked early on which put him under pressure for the rest of the game. Missed an absolute sitter just before half time, screwing wide with just the keeper to beat from 6 yards out following a superb move. But got his head up to assist for Rosicky’s second goal.

Rosicky – 8 – MOTM. Cleared a goal-bound header off the line when at 0-0 then scored a rare double to win us the game. He’d only scored 1 in 60+ appearances before today. The second was a great goal, as he lashed home the rebound after Foster had parried a lovely volley.

Gervinho – 6 – Didn’t reproduce his superb display against Reading last week but did we really expect him to? He did set up the opener with some good work, although his ‘cross’ may have actually been a ‘shot’.

Cazorla – 6 – One lovely through-ball in first half was about his contribution today. Didn’t really get involved as much as he’d have liked and didn’t influence in the final third as we’ve become used to. Still showed signs of his quality in the first half when he was on the ball though.

Giroud – 4 – Great lay-off to tee-up Rambo at the end of the first half but the Welshman failed to convert, but the big Frenchman was largely useless. Hold up play was poor, didn’t win his headers….it just wasn’t his day.

Subs:

Gibbs – 6 – On to see out the game and did little wrong.

Vermaelen – 6 – On for the final 20 minutes and did his bit in keeping the hosts at bay.

Coquelin – N/A

A special mention for the referee, Howard Webb, who was poor throughout. He got the Mertesacker sending off correct, but he made several errors during the game and was booking Arsenal players for fun.

So another massive win in the bag. We’re now fourth in the table and just a point behind Spurs, who host Everton on Sunday. Chelsea welcome Sunderland to the Bridge tomorrow as well so let’s hope for more dropped points and we could be third by this time next week if we beat Norwich. COYG!

can someone tell me whats going on with podolski…..its clear when giroud is having a bad day (he has his fair share)
why not throw on a striker that has been far more prolific then giroud will ever be.
having said that. it was a vital 3 points today so kudos to the team. still think team selection is a contentious issue….

He has had a row with Wenger, who doesn’t like his authority challenged, Pololski speaks his mind and the fool doesn’t like that, so he is off in the Summer as he has seen through Wenger’s lies and dictatorship, once again Wenger’;s ego comes first

I thought Gervinho had a very accomplished game and barely put a foot wrong during the match in terms of decision making. I thought he looked very confident and comfortable with his job, which hasn’t always been the case. It can’t happen in every game but if he can keep playing like this he’ll get plenty of goals and assists each season.
Also I thought you were very harsh on Giroud. He looked the part to me up until we went a man down and basically left him up front on his own. Before that his link-play was really very good and I thought he looked at home in the team – again, something that hasn’t always been the case this season.

agree totally- with your assessments! thought rating above not really very accurate regarding Giroud/Gervinho who both had a good day deserved at least 7.’s

You thought the above ratings weren’t accurate? Giroud deserves a 7? For what? The only shot our striker had on goal was near the end of the game and that wasn’t on target, his hold up play was poor, he deserves 5 at best, think you mut of been watching a reply of a different game

Fabianski and Rosicky should be regular starters, they are both Sharp players as compared to Wojiech,Ramsey/Diaby

I think gervinho deserve more than 6. He was our only mobile striker throughout & our only driver.

.despite Ramsey missing a sitter, collecting a stupid yellow card, almost caused an own goal, and running around like a headless chicken, in your eyes he rates higher than Gerv? pure Rubbish!
Some folks are just way to hard on Gerv….his stats are better than Nasri when he first joined and hes pretty much saved Arsene’s ass pass few games….goal against Swansea, goal and 2 assists against Reading and another assist today. Lay off!

Slaphead isn’t fit to wear the Arsenal top, ond goal against the worst team in the PL, and yesterday his shot was going wide til Rosicky had the intelligence to head it in, what about the terrible miss of a clearance outside our area that almost lead to a goal, that’s the Gervinho, totally useless

woooooooo hang on now criticism of gerv is racism? I dont think the comments I read bout his rating in this article mention the colour of the guys skin once. yes hes been a game winner last couple of matches but id say its more to quantity of runs etc rather than quality. I think folks rate him badly cos for the amount of shots runs and crosses he puts in hes successful with so few. dont tjink it has anything to do with his colour creed sex or anything of the such. so lay off the writers here.

ProperGunner you are a fool, to accuse someone of racism because he doesn’t like his football, what a mong you truly are, you are a deluded AKB I bet, been following Arsenal since Wenger I bet

What a clown u are bringing race into this, doesn’t matter if he is white, black, yellow or blue, he ain’t arsenal quality, he runs to the opposition box then goes round and round like a wind up toy

I think the rating you gave Gev is not good enough! He deserves at least a seven. He hadly put a foot wrong. Giroud held his line. He was not awesome, neither was he bad. I’d give him a six!

a bit harsh on Gerv. without being biased there is an air of imminent threat whenever He is on d ball even though he doesn’t always deliver but u cant take him for granted, at least d last two games have proven dat and dat was actually what was needed after d red card, we were now toothless, we left them without nothing to think about except attacking us. i expected an injection of pace i.e take out Giroud and bring ox instead of Coquelin. with this we still have pace to break out because our Giroud based tactics of holding d ball wasn’t working at all. well thank God we saw it out. great game, great play.COYG,God bless THE ARSENAL. love from Nigeria.

Completely wrong about Mertesacker. Easily our best defender and did not put Kos in trouble with the pass, Kos just stood there looking at it!

He had to make the tackle for the pen, was unlucky to miss it and frankly the penalty was so bad Fabianski jumped over it as it was struck at him.

I really wondered why Podolski didn’t come on. He may love the club but we know what not playing him means. Let’s not be arrogant here, Poldi is an asset. That’s a left-footed(coughs, RVP)striker there waiting to score more goals

    April 6, 2013 at 11:36 pm

    Dude, your ratings are unrealistic.
I think Wenger knows who to play. he sees his players in practice everyday, do you?

Mertesacker did what was necessary. That was a “professional” foul. Fabianki nearly saved it. BFG checked for the offside flag, saw none, then fouled the striker. Defenders are forced to do that at times.

You criticize even when we win. Are you Piers Morgan illegitimate child?

Wenger is an idiot who is destroying the club with his outdated tactics, he is now the longest serving manager to go without a trophy at Arsenal, are you one of Wenger’s AKB followers, the deluded fools

The reason why Podolski isn’t playing much these days is because he’s due for ankle surgery in the summer and he’s not 100% fit. Wenger doesn’t want to take the risk on him and aggravate his ankle.

I can’t blame Per, the midfield switched off once we went 2 up and they just strolled around allowing Brom to make that pass into the box. People can say what they want about Merts but once he got sent off our defensive shape and organization went to hell. What he lacks in pace he makes up for in his organizational skills and believe me having an organized defense is much more effective than having fast defenders who are just ball chasing and booting clearances.

I don’t understand why Giroud should play for 90 min and losing the ball in his legs,he have no idea of our expectation.WE NEED A REAL STRIKER!

  21. Geoff

    April 7, 2013 at 6:05 am

Rosicky certainly… but Fabianski does not dominate his box, especially with crosses. Giroud a carthorse, Ramsey was good apart from terrible miss….

Overall team performance was good but this guy OLIVIER GIROUD is a worst of money and game time. A total let down on other players. He is a spectator a passenger who contributes nothing shame

Your ratings of d players are on point except Per ratings.. Wud rate him a 5 at least cause he did wat he thought was best..
And as for Giroud, I don’t know what that guy was doing on d field.. Confused as usual. he was put in as a man to hold up d ball and build up play up front but he he gave d ball away anytime he had a touch except d one time pass he made to rambo who put d ball wide as usual..I wud giv Giroud a 2 at best..he shud have been taking off since he had nothing to offer and for gervi, u are very right abt his ratings..I wouldn’t rate him higher..But u missed d ratings of d man on d touch line..his changes and tactics were Questionable..once wba made changes and switched to a 4-3-3 formation, wenger should have reacted with som changes of his as well bringing on Podolski for Giroud and Chambo for Gervi and will would hav had a more comfortable win

Mertazacker took one for the team – hats off to him – if it was not for his do or die tackle that went awry we would have ended up losing this game – We were the 2nd best team on the park. Thank you Mert!
My pre game pleas to give Rosciski more game time as he is one of our best was vindicated by his masterfull performance.
