Arsenal and Tottenham are on stand-by to move for Gonzalo Higuain after the Real Madrid striker refused to commit his future to the club beyond this season, according to the Express.

The Argentinean hitman has enjoyed a hugely successful seven years at Madrid, scoring 117 goals and providing 44 assists during his 253 appearances en route to lifting 3 La Liga trophies.

However, he’s fallen behind French striker Karim Benzema in Jose Mourinho’s pecking order this season and the Express claim Arsenal and Tottenham are both interested in bringing him to the Premier League if he decides he wants a move at the end of the season.

The north London duo have now been put on stand-by after Higuain refused to commit his future to the Bernabeu past this summer. When asked by reporters after Saturday night’s 5-1 win over Levante if he’ll be leaving Real, the striker said:

“I’m not going to talk about that now.

“I can only say that I’m committed to the club and will help the team until the end of the season.” Higuain is quoted as saying by the Express.

The newspaper suggests that Real may try and use the 25-year-old as bait to land Gareth Bale this summer while it’s also understood Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is a long-term admirer of the Argentinean international’s and would be keen on luring him to the Emirates.
