[Player Ratings] Arsenal 0-0 Everton: Giroud The Villain As Gunners Fire Blanks

Giroud – Not good enough

Arsenal were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by an extremely well organised and hard working Everton side at the Emirates on Tuesday night.

Steven Pienaar has the best chance for the visitors but Olivier Giroud was the villain for Arsenal, missing a host of chances to break the deadlock. I feel we did enough to win the game but Everton really worked hard and defended superbly. If we had a world class striker we’d have won the game, no doubt about it. Here are my ratings from the game:

Arsenal ratings

Szczesny – 6 – Made a few routine saves and did little wrong on his return to the team. Defence protected him well from set pieces.

Sagna – 6.5 – Won his share of headers and battled well all night. Did enough to put Pienaar off when he was well placed to score early on but his crossing really is very poor.

Mertesacker – 7 – Made several important interceptions and his experience was key in this game. Won his aerial duels as well.

Koscielny – 7.5 – Another excellent display from the Frenchman. Was a driving force from the back and looks really comfortable next to Per.

Gibbs – 6.5 – Ran his heart out down the left but like Sagna, his distribution let him down at times.

Arteta – 7 – Decent display against his former side. Got stuck in against a physical Everton outfit when he needed to.

Wilshere – 6 – Slow start but grew into the game during the later stages of the first half. Was picked out for some rough treatment by the visitors but you could tell he’s still not 100% fit just yet. Subbed off in the 65th minute.

Ramsey – 7.5 – Nice cross found Giroud who should have scored in the first half but his work rate was exceptional all evening. Chased every ball and put his foot in when required as well.

Cazorla – 8 – MOTM. Superb performance. Head and shoulders above the rest in terms of quality and technical ability. Ran the game and he also fought well against the Everton bully-boys.

Walcott – 5 – Just didn’t get in the game enough. Used his pace well on one break but otherwise was ineffectual. Subbed.

Giroud – 4 – Oh dear. Missed several good chances to get the winner. Missed a glorious chance in the first half but failed to convert with the goal gaping from a Ramsey cross, couldn’t get on the end of Chamberlain’s cross in the second period and also blazed a decent chance over the bar. His touch was also suspect all night but he did win a few headers. He’s never going to be good enough to lead the line for us though. Impact sub at best.

Subs

Oxlade-Chamberlain – 6.5 – Positive impact from the Oxe. Should probably have shot when clean through on the right hand side though.

Podolski – 6 – Looked lively when he came on for Walcott. Runs off the ball were impressive and he got involved in some moves with Gibbs and Cazorla.

Monreal – N/A

If you missed the game or want to relive Giroud’s misses you can watch highlights from Arsenal’s draw with Everton here.

So the draw leaves us two points clear in third but Chelsea have two games in hand and Spurs one game in hand, so technically Champions League qualification is now out of our hands. However, Tottenham’s game in hand is away at Chelsea, so someone’s guaranteed to drop points in that game, so we’re still looking good for a top-four finish.

I thought our best player was Ramsey. His link-up and forward play was good, he was constantly and tirelessly pressing opponents, even his tackling was surprisingly good. Cazorla wasn’t bad, though.

Agreed. Ramsey has really impressed as of late. Full of hustle and speedier play. Played some nice passes to the wings tonight, as well.

Giroud a 4? Not his best game, but he didn’t do that much wrong, he won lots of headers, even though he lacked support and blaming him for the miss from Chamberlain cross is not fair, it wasn’t the best cross, it was actually behind him, so there wasn’t much he could do. Overall pretty fair though.

He did much WRONG by not scoring withe many golden chances. If he is a defender or DM, I would not say that.
He is supposed to add another sort of attacking force with more physical appearance who can do good headers. This sort of striker is lacking and would be useful at time. That is why I support having him in the team BUT that is based on the assumption that he can score at a descent rate. Unfortunately, it seems Giroud only score when the opponent breaks down. He can’t break down the opponent and seldom make tricky goals.

He can make something out of nothing for others but not for himself. Giroud is more effective with Podolski than Walcott or Gervinho. He’s an above average striker but not made for Arsenal’s system and style of play.

i dont agree…its only obvious that he should have cut in a little bit to the right to put himself in the best position to get to the ball first…check the replays again. He was a yard ahead of both defenders but kept running straight, waiting for the ball to get to him…not the best cross though but he’s a striker for crying out loud. Thats basic soccer instincts.

The awful crazy truth is that Bendtner is better than Giroud. Not that i’m saying Bendtenr is any good, but Giroud is just awful. He is decent with his head, but he is clumsy with his feet. Whether its his finishing or in the run of play, his foot work is just not good enough. It’s as if he is wearing clown shoes out there.

Say what? You just applied an accurate description of Bendtner to Giroud. Say what you want about his finishing but Giroud plays an excellent first touch and has soft feet for a big man.

Excellent first touch??? Girouds first touch and flicks are clumsy and unnecessary most of the time or maybe its just me…

He’s on the clumsy side but his touch is not…..

Not a game for Jack to play in much less start. Maybe against lower opposition but he’s not ready right now and Wenger already said he made a mistake in rushing him back but he throws him in the fray anyways. Poor call by Arsene as Rosicky could have offered more trickery and drive in the penalty area.

Bad call again i thought from Arsene Wenger.

I just dont understand why he refuses to acknowledge Tomas rosicky after showing some great form recently has placed him as a non starter.

His experience and form will tell you that he deserved his place back.

I feel sorry for Tomas..he has been so patient during his injuries and lack of form in the past but he never complains.

Am i wrong ? Maybe Arsene just believes that Tomas isnt the future for arsenal and doesn’t want to dissapoint Wilshere.

Whatever the reason, IMO i think arsene has lost the plot.

Expereience and form in whichever order should take precedence when choosing your best 11 on the day and especially for an important match that would help arseanl’s top 4 chances.

Arsenal will never win any trophy again with this man called wenger in charge. Neva av I seen a manager who shoots himself so much in the foot with bad and biased decisions. Why does giroud keep starting all games and doesn’t get subbed even while being awful? Why isn’t podolski used as a striker? Why was rosicky on the bench and Wilshere rushed again? So many faults. This is d same way this overrated coach persisted with eboue, senderos, bendtner, Denison etc for years before finally realising they were no good but after so much had been lost. ARSENE WENGER IS A FAILURE. Compare his post-dein signings to previous years and you can be certain dein was d genius not arsene. THERE IS NO HOPE with a biased and blind coach. Get out wenger.

its good that you are all realising Aw doesn’t work on performance merit but operates on favouritism,he is arrogant,he thinks he’s a know it all.he always leaps before he looks.he makes the most mistakes in his fielding, decision making and the re occurence of the same mistakes is the most i’ve ever seen with a so called “world class manager,”gladly his reign has come to an end.Hopefully we can bare one last season, please board for once hid to the voice of the fans who are loyal, die hards and have been extremely patient,DON’T EXTEND AW’S’ CONTRACT,enough is enough,he lacks ambition and only started showing real fight and commitment at the realisation champions league football is at stake.his team deserves it,but he doesn’t,he never believed in them anyway,a manager whom a CL slot is winning a trophy!

I agree with Jaji. Podolski should have started instead of Giroud. Podolski is a far better better striker. If Arsenal cannot make the top 4, it’ll be Wenger’s fault for poor team selection and substitutions.

    • G. Clapham

      April 17, 2013 at 4:11 am

True that he’s a better striker than Giroud but not made to lead the front line. Like Giroud, he really needs someone up top with him.

well This looks like a nail biteing finish to the end of the season , as mr wenger said getting a champion league spot is the most important trophy for arsenal ,
i guess he may have missed judged some of the other clubs who want that fourth and third spot
its sad thats all we have cheer about once again this season a champions league position 5 games left 15 points up for grabs arsenal need them all

Still 0-0 is good result for Arsenal.

We can say Arseanl played one of their best game in this season even if they have not scored.

      You really think so?

i thought arsenal’s game lacked momentum and vision.

Bad balls to the front and in the last 5 minutes of the game they just didnt look hungry enough..

For god’s sake when you rely on sagna to deliver 80% of your crosses from a RB who isnt really a winger, then your team has problems

      • Chris

        April 17, 2013 at 9:25 am

and 80% of those crosses, Sagna kept hitting them at the Everton players.

Given how biased the ref was last night, I guess a draw is all that can be expected. I would never see such refereeing in a ManU home game. I was shocked to see Gibson and Piennar remain on the field. and Barkley shd have been booked much earlier. no card for Felliani? The guy was committing one foul after another.
That nasty scot David Moyes said that these fouls are “allowed in Football”. If they are allowed in football, how come they are “Fouls”? Arsenal got mugged last night by the ref yet again.
Typical EPL: Different rules for brits and different rules for foreigners.
Fair brits. Arsene is wrong for suffering this year in year out. you would rather rant on about a mediocre run of the mill manager like moyes.

Y rush Wilshere back in2 d team n keep out experienced n in-form Rosicky? Y play Giroud up front wen u have a fit n in-form Podolski? Y start Walcott wen u have a fit, skill full, strong n defence threatening Ox? Y play Gibbs against a physical Everton syd wen u have an experienced n top performing Monreal? Sagna’s crosses r so awful, y nt play Jenkinson lyk Ramsey if u want his game 2 grow? So many Questions on team tactics 4 Wenger 2 answer. Dis Arsenal team cn beat ani team wit d right selection n spirit. Itz veri clear dat Wenger has been d problem of dis team all along. He hates d team n fans. Yes he does cos he always repeats dsame mistakes evri year bt expects a different result? Y is he so wicked, heartless, stupidly proud n stubborn? Enough is enough 4 dis overrated man. Wit all d resources @ his disposal, look @ d mediocre team of underperformers he cn assemble (Giroud n co). Give me Moyes n I’ll have ma Arsenal back. At least he shows ambition wit d little resources @ his disposal. If Arsenal cn add Moyes, Baines, Jelavic, Mirallas n Fellaini 2 their ranks, n take out Wenger, Vermaelen, Mertsacker, Giroud n Diaby, we’ll win d League. Trust me

Jack w. Is d flop of d match&t giroud. Keeping rosisky on bench & start unfit jack is of no sense. No player in arsenal could bench rssky if not injured.

I think this is a game where we needed some trickery…. i feel playing Gervinho could have paid dividends as Wacott too often couldnt beat his man, Rosicky and Pod too… I think wenger like Wilshere and Giroud an walcott…. he again tinkered with a winning team.
