Arsenal have opened talks with Liverpool target Ashley Williams about a potential summer move to the Emirates, according to the Daily Mail.

Williams has been superb at the heart of Swansea’s defence over the past 2 years, helping the Welsh side become an established Premier League outfit as well as leading Michael Laudrup’s men to the League Cup with a 5-0 win over Bradford at Wembley back in February.

The 28-year-old’s consistent display’s appear to have alerted some of the Premier League big-boys with the Daily Mail claiming Arsenal and Liverpool are keen on luring him away from the Liberty Stadium this summer.

Former Swans boss Brendan Rodgers is understood to be keen on linking up with Williams again at Anfield but the Merseysiders may have to move fast as the newspaper suggests the Gunners are now favourites to sign the £12m-rated defender after holding talks with Williams’ representatives in London last week where a potential summer move to north London was discussed.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is likely to be on the look-out for an established centre-back at the end of the season and the report claims the Frenchman is renewing his interest in Williams after seeing a bid knocked back during the January transfer window.

However, Rodgers is also likely to bring in another defender with Jamie Carragher set to retire at the end of the season and the Northern Irishman may try to use his relationship with Williams to persuade him to choose Anfield over the Emirates.

Always felt that we need 9 defenders 2 for each position plus a versatile player to cover all 4 positions. As far as I am concerned currently santos is the 9th defender; and clearly not good enough. I would make jenkinson the 9th defender then sell santos. We would then have room for another right back. We could then also sell djourou to make room for the 4th centre back. I haven’t included squillaci as he has not played enough games but would release him anyway.

Would be a big loss to Swansea.
Can also lay losing midfield role.
Vulnerable to pace but reads game well. Better than Mertersacker. Plays a passing game. Would fit well but don’t we need a dominating leader. Is he the organiser needed?
