Ivan Gazidis: Vent your fury at him, not Man Utd

Any booing of Robin VanPersie or turning of backs towards the Man Utd team will be nothing less than a repudiation of everything that Arsenal Football Club has stood for since the days of Herbert Chapman. Further it will be nothing less than to display a fundamental misunderstanding of the situation the club finds itself in at this time.

Manchester United is not a financially doped club like a Chelsea or Man City, rather their riches are football generated and borne of a long and proud history of innovation and playing prowess. They are where we have been in our history, even our recent history, and where we want to be again. Like it or not along with ourselves and Liverpool they form the aristocratic elite of the English game. To boo is an act of pathetic jealousy unworthy of our club and its position.

And Arsenal, of all clubs, are conscious that they should act with that little bit of extra class. So should their fans. Some of those fans will be have been amongst the crowd at Highbury in 1982 when Spartak Moscow inflicted a heavy UEFA cup defeat on the Gunners. The whole crowd rather than boo, stood and applauded Spartak off the field. Stewards and even the odd policemen joined in. The fans realised that Spartak’s football was an aspiration, something to learn from. Don’t shoot the messenger.

The fact is that not so long ago we went toe to toe with United. Yes we have a new stadium but at what cost? Mounting years of effectively not competing with the best? We are constantly told we have the money to buy the players we need. What actually happens is that we sell our best players year after year after year. This is compounded by player purchases that can best be described as questionable and some downright bizarre…Andre Santos anyone!!?

When Manchester United, VanPersie et al take to the field on Sunday they should be applauded as worthy champions. After due respect has been given the fans should round on Ivan Gazidis and the board of directors and let them know what they think of the current state of affairs in no uncertain terms. IT ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH!!

Our beef is with THEM not with not the Red Devils.

What do you think, Arsenal fans? Should we boo Man Utd, RVP or the Arsenal board? Leave your opinions in the comments section below.
