Chelsea have been forced to turn their attention to Robert Lewandowski and Wayne Rooney after mega-rich PSG tabled a £43m bid for No.1 Edinson Cavani, writes the Daily Mail.

The Napoli hitman has been on the Blues radar for months and Sky Sports News reported on Tuesday that Chelsea had made a formal approach for the 26-year-old, but were still refusing to meet the players £54m release clause, before later in the day it was revealed that Paris Saint Germain had also entered the chase after submitting a £43m offer of their own.

The Mail claim Blues owner Roman Abramovich has since cooled his interest in Cavani as he’s not prepared to enter a bidding war with the French outfit, with the Russian believed to be cautious about being stung for a second time after seeing his £50m investment in Fernando Torres go pear shaped.

The newspaper suggests that the Europa League winners have now stepped up their interest in Lewandowski and Rooney as they will be available for much lower fees, although there are still numerous stumbling blocks to overcome before they can land the pair.

According to the report, Lewandowski – who has just 1 year left on his contract – is itching to join Bayern Munich but Borussia Dortmund are understood to be determined not to sell another star player to their arch rivals having seen Mario Gotze make the move to the Allianz Arena already this summer.

While Dortmund are keen to keep hold of Lewandowski, they may be prepared to do business with a foreign club and cash in now rather than lose the striker for nothing next summer. However, the 24-year-old could be harder to persuade as he may prefer to bide his time and see out his contract before making his dream move to Bayern in 12 months time.

Rooney is also going to be difficult to land with Manchester United still keen on persuading him to remain at Old Trafford and further talks with David Moyes are expected before the club leave on a pre-season tour of Asia next week.

Even if United are forced into selling the 27-year-old, they will not want to strengthen a title rival so a move to Stamford Bridge could prove difficult.
