Arsenal & Chelsea Make Suarez Enquiry & Retain Hope of Landing Rooney

By on July 7, 2013

With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal and Chelsea have ambitious targets in Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney.

Arsenal and Chelsea are still hopeful they can lure Wayne Rooney away from Manchester United this summer while the duo have also made enquiries to Liverpool over Luis Suarez’s availability, according to the Mirror.

Rooney’s future at Old Trafford has been in doubt ever since former boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the striker asked to leave the club towards the end of last season – a claim that the 27-year-old has denied.

New manager David Moyes insisted at his first press conference on Friday that Rooney would be staying at United this summer. However, with the player having just two years left to run on his current contract, the Mirror claim that Arsenal and Chelsea remain confident they could prize the striker away from Old Trafford this summer, with the Gunners believed to have already tabled a £20m offer.

Rooney returned to training last Wednesday and the newspaper suggests the only way United may be prepared to cash in is if the player was to submit a written transfer request which would mean he’d forfeit any loyalty bonuses due to him, but it remains to be seen whether the former Everton man would be prepared to take such a step to force a move away from the champions.

Interestingly, the Mirror also claim that Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger have contacted Liverpool to enquire about Luis Suarez’s situation and to assess whether a move within the Premier League would be a possibility if he was sold this summer.

There was widespread reports linking Suarez with Arsenal last week after some bookmakers stopped taking bets on the Emirates being his next destination, while reports in Spain on Thursday claimed Chelsea had already struck an agreement to sign the South American hitman.

Brendan Rodgers is desperate for the Uruguayan to remain at Anfield but the Mirror suggests that if he is sold, a move abroad is almost a certainty with Real Madrid the most likely destination.

An apparent source told the Mirror:

“Apart from Higuain, Arsenal have enquired about two strikers based in the North West, Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez. Chelsea are also interested.”

I’m not a huge fan of un-named ‘sources’ so i’d take the above quote with a large pinch of salt, but if there is any truth in the claims that Arsenal and Chelsea are interested in Rooney and Suarez, it shows the London duo have ambitious plans this summer. Whether they’ll be able to pull off either signing is another question entirely though.

Personally, I think Rooney will remain with United for at least another year and there is virtually no chance Liverpool would sell Suarez to another English club, so Arsenal and Chelsea may have to look at other striking targets this summer.

My personal feeling is that Suarez will stay until the January transfer window. He won’t be cup tied in Europe and clubs will want him to boost their European ambitions. We could get a really good price for him then.

If CFC wanted to get suarez, they needed to sell the idea to the players (at least the key players) before it got out to speculators. You have to always respect your “WARRIORS”. They carry your water for you and suarez had “attacked” one of them in the midst of hostilities. Bad form. NO GO.
