With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Chelsea respond to Wayne Rooney bid reports.

Chelsea have confirmed they have tabled a written offer for unsettled Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney but have denied claims they offered Juan Mata or David Luiz in exchange, according to Sky Sports News.

Widespread reports on Wednesday claimed that the Blues had seen a £10m cash-plus-player offer for Rooney turned down by United, with Jose Mourinho apparently willing to part ways with either Juan Mata or David Luiz.

However, while Chelsea have confirmed a written bid went in on Tuesday, they insist it was a straight cash offer and have categorically denied that any player was offered as part of the deal.

Their statement on Sky Sports News read:

“Chelsea Football Club can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney.

“Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is currently being briefed to the press in Sydney, the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any players from Chelsea to Manchester United.”

It’s understood that Rooney is looking to leave Old Trafford this summer after expressing his anger and frustration at comments made by new boss David Moyes that suggested the 27-year-old was now considered as understudy to Robin van Persie, while chief executive Ed Woodward’s claims that no extension talks were planned with the player, despite the fact he’s got less than two years left to run on his current deal, are also believed to have angered the forward.

It seems Chelsea are now ready to offer the England ace a fresh start in the capital but with United seemingly ready to play hardball, this saga could run right until the end of the transfer window.

This was seriously a ludicrous headline to do a player plus cash deal for Rooney, what was the BBC thinking??!! Man U would have jumped at the chance if such as deal existed, funny how they’ve updated their story now 🙂
