Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward has left the clubs pre-season tour of Australia to head back to England to undertake ‘urgent transfer business’, according to Sky Sports News.

United are currently down under as part of their pre-season preparations but Sky Sports claim Woodward informed club officials he had to return home to carry out some urgent transfer-related business.

What that business is remains unclear, though. The news comes just hours after Chelsea confirmed they had tabled a bid for unsettled striker Wayne Rooney but denied suggestions they had offered United either David Luiz or Juan Mata in exchange.

Reports early on Wednesday morning suggested the Blues had offered either Mata or Luiz as well as £10m for Rooney – an offer that was understood to have been rejected by the champions. However, a statement from Chelsea read:

“Chelsea Football Club can confirm that yesterday it made a written offer to Manchester United for the transfer of Wayne Rooney.

“Although the terms of the offer are confidential, for avoidance of doubt and contrary to what is currently being briefed to the press in Sydney, the proposed purchase price does not include the transfer or loan of any players from Chelsea to Manchester United.” (source: Sky Sports)

United have also been strongly linked with a move for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas and reports on Monday claimed they had tabled an opening £25m bid.

Whether Woodward’s work is related to either Rooney or Fabregas remains to be seen but it appears he’s up to something, so watch this space…
