Arsene Wenger has been given the go-ahead to launch a £40m offer for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and is confident the striker will swap Anfield for the Emirates this summer, according to the Mirror.

The report claims the Gunners have already had one bid – believed to be a package worth up to £35m – rejected by the Merseysiders, who maintain their star man is not for sale.

However, it appears Liverpool’s stance will not deter Arsenal and the Mirror claim the clubs hierarchy have backed boss Arsene Wenger by sanctioning a new and improved £40m bid. It’s understood the Frenchman has a transfer kitty of around £70m to spend this summer and the clubs money-men appears happy for him spent a large proportion of that on Suarez.

What a £40m bid will mean remains unclear. The newspaper suggests that Suarez’s agent, Pere Guardiola, believes the Uruguayan has a clause in his contract that allows him to leave if that figure is met. However, Liverpool are adamant that it simply means they have to inform the striker of the offer but are under no obligation to sell for that price.

Brendan Rodgers reiterated the clubs desire to keep hold of Suarez at a press conference on Thursday. The 26-year-old is due to link-up with the rest of the Liverpool squad on Monday and Rodgers said he expects the player to stay “unless something drastic happens”.

“Luis Suarez is a wonderful player and he is still very much a Liverpool player.

“He is a very important member of this squad and I am looking forward to working with him again this season.

“There has been lots of speculation about Luis moving to another club but, as I said, he is very much a Liverpool player.

“We had an offer that was nowhere near what we value him at. He’s one of the top strikers in the world.

“Of course he wants to work and play at the top level. But unless something drastic happens, he will be staying here.

“He has got three years left on his contract. We are looking forward to him helping us get into the Champions League spots.” Rodgers is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

So the Luis Suarez transfer saga looks like it could be about to heat up. With the player due to meet up with the Liverpool squad on Monday and talk of a fresh bid from Arsenal, this weekend could prove pivotal. It certainly sounds like this apparent ‘clause’ could be a potential sticking point in any deal, but a £40m bid from Arsenal could answer a few questions.
