Chelsea will wait until after Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial match on the 9th August before making an improved bid for Wayne Rooney as they hope a hostile reception from the United fans will help push through the move, according to the Independent.

Rooney’s future has come under intense scrutiny in recent months after former boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed he had asked to leave the club before the final game of last season, and the former Everton man was left “angry and confused” by David Moyes’ comments when he suggested the 27-year-old was now considered as back up to Robin van Persie.

Chelsea have made public their desire to take Rooney to Stamford Bridge and have already had an opening bid of £23m plus £2.5m in add ons rejected and are expected to go back in with an improved offer.

However, the Independent are one of sever newspapers who claim today that the Blues have postponed making a second bid until Rooney appears at Old Trafford for Ferdinand’s testimonial next Friday.

The thinking is that Rooney is expected to get a hostile reception from the United faithful and Mourinho is hoping this will reinforce the players belief that he need a fresh start and may even persuade United into selling as they won’t want to keep hold of  a player who’s going to cause unrest among the supports.

Man Utd have so far insisted Rooney is not for sale but the champions may find it difficult to turn down a sizeable offer should one come in as the player has just two years left to run on his contract and is unlikely to sign an extension if he’s forced to stay at the club against his will.
