Arsenal Register Interest In Real Madrid Stopper

Arsenal have registered their interest in signing unsettled Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, according to Spanish publication Marca, but a move is unlikley

With the summer transfer window in full swing, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal have registered their interest in Iker Casillas.

Arsenal have registered their interest in signing unsettled Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, according to Spanish publication Marca.

The long-serving stopper has surprisingly seen his future called into question after losing his first team place to Diego Lopez under former coach Jose Mourinho last season. The 32-year-old was expected to be reinstated as Real’s No.1 when Carlo Ancelotti took charge in the summer but again he was left on the bench for the clubs season opener last weekend.

This has lead to further speculation over his future at the Bernabeu and Marca – who are believed to have close ties with Madrid – are reporting today that Arsenal have made contact with the La Liga outfit and the players representatives to make it clear they are keen to take him to north London if he wants a move this summer.

However, despite his frustration at being left out, the newspaper claims that Casillas isn’t ready to give up on his boyhood club just yet and is prepared to stay and fight for his place, so a move to the Emirates is highly unlikely.

Arsene Wenger is understood to be on the look-out for competition to Wojciech Szczesny and Casillas would certainly be a superb addition, but I see this as an opportunistic approach at best. The keeper is Madrid through-and-through with many believing he’ll see out his career there, so I wouldn’t be getting my hopes up that Casillas will be wearing the famous Red & White any time soon.

Szczesny has responded well to his below-par performance against Villa by putting in two excellent display’s against Fenerbache and Fulham, so I think a goalkeeper is well down the priority list for the boss. With just a week left until the window closes I think we should be concentrating on strengthening other areas first.
