Liverpool get back to Premier League action after the two week international break as they travel to Wales to take on Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Monday night.

Ahead of the game boss Brendan Rodgers has been speaking to LiverpoolFC.com and gave an injury update with the latest on Daniel Sturridge, Kolo Toure, Joe Allen and Aly Cissokho.

Striker Sturridge picked up a thigh strain after scoring the winner against Manchester United earlier this month. He was subsequently ruled out of England’s double-header with Moldova and Ukraine but Rodgers has confirmed that he’s winning his fitness race to be in contention to start on Monday.

The player trained on Friday morning and will now be assessed over the weekend to see if he’s available to start against the Swans.

Rodgers also confirmed that midfielder Allen and defender Toure are also both in contention to start but summer signing Cissokho is still a few weeks away from recovering from his ankle injury.

Here’s what Rodgers told the clubs official website:

“We’ll know more so over the next couple of days. He was obviously disappointed to miss out on the England games and I felt for him because he came here, first and foremost, to be do as well as he possibly can for Liverpool – knowing if he could do well, his aim was obviously to be the England striker.

“It was the medical experts who made the decision – it wasn’t Daniel Sturridge. He left the game against Manchester United injured, he’s gone away and the great medical staff they have at England and the experts they have there deemed him not quite fit enough for the first game [against Moldova].

“He returned back [to Melwood] and there was a slight improvement, but obviously Roy [Hodgson] and his staff have to make the decision on whether he’s going to be right or available. Obviously at that stage, he wasn’t.

“But by the time we play on Monday, it’ll be nearly two weeks and for a grade 1 strain, people in football and the experts who know better than I will you tell you it is perfectly reasonable to be back playing in that timescale.

“We’ve been out on the field today and we’ll see how he is over the next 48 hours or so.”

“I think if it was a Saturday game, he may well have struggled but that extra wee bit of time gives him a chance to play. I would suspect he will hopefully be fit. He won’t be 100 per cent fit, but we’ll see.”

“Joe has trained with the team today. He looked good this morning and is certainly fighting for a place on Monday.

“Kolo is with our physiologists and is working well. He should be available for Monday.

“Cissokho is still a few weeks away yet, but working hard.”

Liverpool will be looking to build upon their excellent start to the new season that’s seen them collect a maximum 9 points from their opening three games so far with boss Rodgers and striker Sturridge recently winning the manager and player of the month awards.
