Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that midfielder Santi Cazorla is set to miss the next 4-6 weeks after picking up an ankle injury while away with Spain last week, according to Goal.

Cazorla missed Saturday’s 3-1 win away at Sunderland after returning home from international duty with an ankle problem and while the injury was only initially expected to keep the player out for a matter of days, it now seems it’s worse than first feared.

Speaking after today’s victory at the Stadium of Light, Wenger confirmed that Cazorla would be out for a ‘few weeks’ and he’s not expected to play again before the next international break – which would rule him out of action for Arsenal until the 19th October.

“Cazorla has an ankle problem. He will be out for a few weeks as well.

“I don’t think he will play before the next international break.” Wenger is quoted as saying by Goal

The news will come as a huge blow with the likes of Mikel Arteta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lukas Podolski, Abou Diaby and Tomas Rosicky already on the sidelines.  It means the former Malaga man is likely to miss the Gunners next six games against Marseille, Stoke, WBA, Swansea, Napoli and WBA again.

There could be further bad news on the injury front with in-form striker Olivier Giroud substituted late on after picking up what appeared to be a knee injury and Wenger is fearing the worst.

“That’s my worry [that Giroud is injured], today, after the game,” he said. “We are very thin at the moment.

“It’s a knee problem. He is the player at the moment who we cannot lose.” Wenger is quoted as saying by Goal

With Podolski and Yaya Sanogo injured, Arsenal have no recognised striker available and may be forced to use Theo Walcott through the middle or call on youngster Chuks Akpom to fill the void if Giroud is ruled out.
