Arsenal are ready to renew their interest in Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez when the January transfer window opens with boss Arsene Wenger keen to add a striker to his ranks this winter, according to the Daily Mail.

The Gunners were strongly linked with both strikers during the summer and riled Liverpool with a cheeky bid of £40,000,001 for Suarez after the Uruguayan went public with his desire to leave Anfield.

Rooney was also heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford with Chelsea also failing with their bid to sign the 27-year-old – who became unsettled at United following Sir Alex Ferguson’s claim that he had asked for a transfer towards the end of last season.

The Mail claim Arsene Wenger still has funds available to further strengthen his squad when the January transfer window opens and a world class striker remains his priority after he failed to land one this summer.

The newspaper suggests that Wenger hopes the signing of Mesut Ozil will indicate the clubs ambition and the Frenchman is believed to be confident he is building a side capable of challenging for the Premier League title this season.

Arsenal currently sit top of the league after a 3-1 win over Sunderland on Saturday – although Liverpool will regain top spot if they avoid defeat away at Swansea on Monday – but it remains to be seen whether the north Londoners have the squad to maintain a title challenge throughout the season.

United and Liverpool were resolute in holding on to their strikers this summer and while you’d think it’s going to prove equally difficult to prize them away in January, Rooney may arguably be the more attainable of the two.

The newspaper claims that David Moyes wants to offer Rooney a new contract – with his current deal running out in just over 18 months time – but talks may not open until next year meaning the former Everton striker may be willing to consider his future in the winter if the Gunners come calling – particularly after he was forced to remain at Old Trafford this summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s autobiography is released next month and some suggest this could have a major say on Rooney’s future, with the former United boss likely to reveal several secrets about the pairs relationship during his time in charge at the club.

Any move for Suarez appears highly unlikely so if Wenger does want to bring in a top class striker, perhaps his best bet would be to go for Rooney.
