Arsenal’s 18-Man Squad For Marseille Clash – Giroud & Ozil Passed Fit

Arsenal begin their Champions League campaign with a clash against French outfit Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome on Wednesday night. Here is the 18-man squad.

Arsenal begin their Champions League campaign with a clash against French outfit Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome on Wednesday night.

The Gunners go into the game off the back of Saturday’s 3-1 win over Sunderland and will be looking to get off to a positive start in what’s going to be an extremely tough group that also includes Borussia Dortmund and Napoli.

Arsene Wenger has received a double injury boost ahead of the match with Arsenal.com confirming on Tuesday afternoon that striker Olivier Giroud and new signing Mesut Ozil have both been passed fit.

Giroud was a doubt after picking up a knee problem in the closing stages at the weekend but he has proven his fitness in training this morning and is in contention to start tomorrow.

He will be joined by Ozil – who was a doubt due to tight muscles following his debut on Saturday – and Per Mertesacker who has recovered from sickness. The trio are on the plane alongside youngsters Chuba Akpom and Isaac Hayden with Emmanuel Frimpong and Serge Gnabry missing out.

A statement on Arsenal’s official website read:

Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud have been passed fit for Wednesday’s game while Per Mertesacker is back in contention after missing the win at Sunderland.

Isaac Hayden and Chuba Akpom are both in Arsène Wenger’s 18-man squad to face Marseille but Serge Gnabry and Emmanuel Frimpong have not travelled to France.

With this news in mind, here is the likely 18-man squad.

  1. Szczesny
  2. Fabianski
  3. Sagna
  4. Jenkinson
  5. Mertesacker
  6. Koscielny
  7. Vermaelen
  8. Gibbs
  9. Monreal
  10. Wilshere
  11. Ramsey
  12. Miyaichi
  13. Flamini
  14. Hayden
  15. Ozil
  16. Walcott
  17. Akpom
  18. Giroud

Akpom and Hayden have come in for Frimpong and Gnabry and with Mertesacker also returning to the squad, Ryo Miyaichi is the likeliest candidate to miss out from the 18 that went to Sunderland. I don’t see Wenger making too many changes to the starting eleven with perhaps Mertesacker the only one likely to come in.
