Arsenal Eye Ambitious Double Bundesliga Swoop

Despite the summer transfer window being closed there is still plenty of gossip in the newspapers, so we’ll keep you up to date on all the latest transfer news. Today,  Arsenal are linked with moves for Julian Draxler and Marco Rues.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is lining-up an audacious double move for highly-rated German pair Julian Draxler and Marco Rues, according to the Express.

The Gunners smashed their transfer record on transfer deadline day with the £42.5m signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid but it seems Wenger still has reserves left in his kitty and is eyeing yet more German talent.

Arsenal were heavily linked with Schalke’s Draxler during the summer and the Express claim they will renew their interest when the window re-opens in January, but will face still competition from Italian champions Juventus who are believed to be willing to meet the Bundesliga outfit’s £34m asking price.

The 20-year-old has emerged as one of Germany’s most promising talents and recently signed a new long-term contract with Schalke, but it seems Arsenal may have to wait until at least next summer before having a chance of signing him with the report suggesting the young attacker will wait until after next summer’s World Cup before considering his future.

Another player Wenger has his eye on is supposedly Borussia Dortmund’s talented attacker Rues with the newspaper claiming the Frenchman is prepared to test the Champions League finalists resolve with a £30m offer this winter.

While that might be enough to persuade Dortmund into cashing in on the 24-year-old, the Express suggest they would demand the full value of his release clause – believed to be £34m – which would likely see Wenger delay his move until the summer due to the player being cup-tied in the Champions League during the second half of the season.

These are certainly ambitious plans from Arsenal and it’s clear following the signing of Ozil that the club are now targetting a higher level of player. Whether they would be able to pull off either of these deals remains to be seen but if they could bring in either Draxler or Rues they would join an ever-growing list of Germans at the Emirates that already includes Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski as well as youngsters Serge Gnabry and Thomas Eisfeld.
