[Player Ratings] Chelsea 2-0 Fulham: Oscar & Mikel Score In Ugly Derby Win

By on September 22, 2013

John Obil Mikel

Chelsea put a bad week behind them with a 2-0 victory over Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night.

It took the Blues till the second half to break the deadlock in the west London derby, with the excellent Oscar finding the net from close range. John Obi Mikel then added a rare goal to his collection with a fine effort in the 84th minute.

Chelsea struggled to find their flow in the first half and all eyes were on Jose Mourinho as he left both Juan Mata and David Luiz out of his match-day squad. Mourinho and his team have come under criticism recently after losing their last two games (against Everton and FC Basel) and things almost got off to a terrible start in the game. Chances were limited in the first half and the best of those fell to Fulham’s on-loan striker Darren Bent. The ex-England forward raced clear of the Chelsea defence but his effort on goal was tame and Petr Cech saved comfortably.

It took Chelsea till the 52nd minute to take the lead and there was a touch of fortune about it. Andre Schurrle did well to beat his man in the area and his attempt at goal was blocked by ‘keeper David Stockdale. Samuel Eto’o’s shot from the rebound was once again spilled by Stockdale and Oscar was left with a simple tap in. On 84 minutes a deep corner from Frank Lampard was headed back across goal by John Terry, and Mikel adjusted his body superbly to fire into the corner. It was the Nigerian’s first Premier League goal for the club in 185 league appearances.

Chelsea

Cech- 7- made a good save from Bent in the first half to keep the scores level. Had little to do for the rest of the game.

Cole- 7- it’s very rare that we a see a poor performance from England’s first choice left back at Stamford Bridge and Cole didn’t let anyone down. Solid, and an outlet in attack.

Terry- 7- like Cech, Chelsea’s skipper was rarely troubled but dealt with what was put in front of him.

Cahill- 7- looked more comfortable alongside Terry than with Luiz. Posed an aerial threat from set-pieces.

Ivanovic- 7- the Serb complimented a fine defensive display from the back four with composure and assurance beyond the half-way line.

Mikel- 8- protected his back four with his usual dependence and showed brilliant reactions and athleticism to volley in his first league goal.

Ramires- 6- was his usual self rampaging forward to assist in Chelsea attacks.

Schurrle- 5- despite being preferred to Mata on a number of occasions this season, the German has yet to justify his inclusion on the pitch. Did well in the build up to Oscar’s goal but his delivery often let him down.

Hazard- 7- had Fulham’s defender’s running scared with his direct running.

Oscar- 8- with Mata spending most of his time on the bench (or behind the bench!) Oscar has become Chelsea’s Mr Dependable when it comes to creating and scoring goals. Popped up in the right place at the right time to put the Blues into the lead and was superb throughout.

Eto’o- 6- certainly better from the newest recruit but we are still yet to see the best of the Cameroon man. Was at hand to close in on Schurrle’s spilled effort which was eventually dispatched by Oscar.

Man of the Match- Oscar- it was a close call between the Brazilian and Mikel who notched his first league goal in his seven years at the club, but Oscar was dazzling. Brought others selflessly into play and was a threat in the box.

Subs

Torres- 6- obviously saw this as a chance to impress as he looked lively when he came on with 25 minutes to play. Went close with a header.

Lampard- 6- played his part in the victory, his deep corner was headed across goal for Mikel to score.

De Bruyne- 5- introduced with five minutes to play; didn’t have time to make a significant impact.

How good was Oscar today? Who should have gotten Man of the Match: Oscar or Mikel? Are you happy to win ugly or does Mourinho need to introduce a more pleasing style? Should Mata have started? Please leave your comments below…

Mata is the most talented and kind person at Chelsea, It is a disrespect to him and all Chelsea fans, that you come here to destroy his confidence and joy to play for Chelsea. We as fans are completely happy with Mata being the conductor at Chelsea, and you as a employee at the service of the club has the responsibility to nourish and enhance Mata’s qualities , not the contrary Mourinho.
I believe you are acting cowardly abusing your managerial position and do not deserve the idol position you held among Chelsea fans.
Keep Mata and Luis and Azpilcueta frozen because your inability to deliver good football strategies not centurions playing for survival and the results will probe you are wrong very soon at the Europa League were you belong.

Jose is becoming a pain in the neck. Every match so far has been the most uncomfortable football I’ve seen in years. He has ruined our flashy offensive style and restricted our best players. Jose has to learn to adapt to an attacking team, not the team to become a boring defensive unit. Sorry Mo, but you have to go before you destroy Chelsea.

Mou is a confused man. Its obvious from Chelsea boring style of play. He’s too defensive minded! Imagine Mou saying the best team lost in our match against Bayern even a blind man would not say that.

what did you expect him to say, that the worest team lost? how do you think the players will feel after that.you actually don’t understand football, all he did by saying that was to boost his players confidence and mind set or have you forgotten that beryan has more experience players that chelsea and that some of our boys are too young and still need confidence to perform against a team like that.if u ask me I will say that chelsea player better than munich by making them chase the game even with ramirez off.but with all said and done, mourinho needs to let hazard push up with his freedom to creat, dribble and score and chelsea will have more space to score.joseph stop all these bad coments, if u re truly a chelsea fan you won’t be so careless with your words about mournho at this early stage.BLUES for life.

If i may asked, why MATA does’t fight for ball when he loose it and help the defence?
we should be very objective and realistic when giving analises in some case.

we chelsea fans should stop this early criticism of our coach for not using Juan Mata, because he sees Oscar as d most performing player nw, al i want to say is that mata is nt playing to our coach taste. Up Blues.

from your rating I can tell u hate Schurrle- arguably one of best buys this season , very hard working unlike your LAZY MATA , who came in in the Basel game and we conceded 2 GOALS , who broke the Fulham defence to give us our 1st goal if I may ask you?

For me I feel mourinho is in the right position to know the most inform and best performing player…. Not taking anything away to matter becos of his perfomances with Cfc.if u need a player to play to a certain standard of futbol theses days,u have to give him a playing time to adapt..

I know that Mata is a world class playmaker even more experienced than Oscar..if u luk at man city yesterday,u could see the relationship and that connectivity between the midfield and attack..we lack it in our present squad..Mou should Do something about it..

Oscar man of the match, Jose great manager take it or you leave it. Mata should 1st prove he is a good player b4 been consider as a great player, lots of players has gone through this kind of transformation & they still became great in life eg the “Drog” Drogba ( 4rm Defender to Striker), “el Nino” Torres ( 4rm Goalkeeper to Striker), the Mexican great Jorge Campos ( 4rm Striker to Goalkeeper), e.t.c. So let Mata show the world he can adapt to all kind of style & Mata should bear it in mind that Oscar play that role last season even he play as a defensive midfielder last season so this makes him complete player & more than Mata. Quote me wrong !

Mata is a very gud player but his ability to fight for the ball is quite negative for me i think mou made the right decision football is not only passes you also mark when you loose the ball and that is exactly what oscar does that mata dont do

We av to b sincere wit ourselves,d work rate of Mata is d lowest among all d attacking players we av.Chelsea is nt Barca or Spain where attacking midfielders are only tasked to distribute passes. It’s true Mata is our best player in d previous season but dat wasn’t under Mou.So let him adapt his game & he will find himself back in d starting XI.Let’s give Mou d chance 2 work,Chelsea will soon play gud futbol…..Blues 4 Life

Mou is the best, he transformed CFC from escorting team 2 competitive one. So is a coach, and professional,so we as a fans we should let him do his job, and not intervene an judge him in his decisions, coz he has got his own plannings.

Neva 4gt mou made chelsea what it is nw(he is a great manager)..his decisions might b weird atimes which makes him unique and i am sure d positive will come soon

Mou is a very unique coach, his reason is very obvious to us for benching Mata, he is not a coach that believes in attacking alone, he is very defense minded, we have just played 6 games this season ( with super cup), lets watch and see, it’s a pity our best player for 2 seasons is now a bench warmer but I expect him to stand to the challenge and show us why he’s world class, we can’t blame Mourinho because Oscar haven’t let him down in anyway, things will work out for us well soon I believe…..#chelseafc till death
