Arsenal blogger ‘Gunner333’ gives us his top 5 greatest ever players to play for the club in the Premier League:

Thierry-Henry Arsenal Leeds

To honour our spectacular early season form, I felt the need to look back at the true Gooner-greats who have played a part in our Premier League success. Although I have not included any of the current crop, I am sure many of their faces will appear in a list such as this in years to come.

5. David Seaman

After signing for a British record-fee for a goalkeeper of £1.3million, David turned out to be one of George Graham’s best ever deals. The outstanding shot-stopper represented Arsenal on 564 occasions, winning 8 major trophies, and kept an incredible 237 clean sheets throughout his 13 year stay in north London. He has an impressive career internationally as well spanning eight years, making a total of 75 appearances for England. The highlight surely being his encapsulating saves against Spain and Scotland in the 1996 European Championships.

4. Ian Wright

Perhaps he should be pushed up the list a little, but never-the-less Ian’s a goal scoring ability earns a place in every ‘top five greatest’ list. Before Henry came along Ian Wright was arguably the greatest goal-scorer in Arsenal history. Wright forged a fantastic partnership with Alan Smith in his early years at the club and went on to score 185 times during a seven-year stay.

3. Tony Adams/ Patrick Vieira

One of the toughest decisions I have had to make in a long time; Vieira or Adams? Both brilliant in their own ways. Adams a classic, old-fashioned rock at the back and Vieira, the powerful catalyst in our star-studded midfield which became invincible. As our almighty captain, Tony racked up fourteen honours in a colossus back-four with Winterburn, Dixon and Bould.

Vieira on the other-hand, was a solid symbol at the start of Wenger’s reign. The Frenchman had the power to win possession and then the footballing intelligence and vision to pick the ‘perfect’ pass.

Difficult to split the two so I’ll leave it up to you to decide the better one in the comments section below.

2. Dennis Bergkamp

This delightful Dutchman was really at the heart of our ‘Golden Era’. He could spot a pass from distance or just simply poke one down the centre of the attacking line, but the main thing is whatever he touched turned to pure gold. Bergkamp is potentially the reason we play like we do now [as well as Wenger of course] and he was a key-part of our transformation of being known as ‘Boring, boring Arsenal’ to a club with some of the best passing statistics in the Premier League. As well as his beautiful style of play, he also scored an impressive 120 times for Arsenal.

1. Thierry Henry

No surprise to see him here. The club-record goal scorer struggled at first to fit in but after he found his stride as a central striker there was no stopping him. After eight years at the club and a brief couple of games in 2012, Henry netted an outstanding 228 times, which smashed the record set by other Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

He had every attribute needed to be the best and was capable of scoring with bullet strikes, cheeky chips or even the odd audacious back-heel. An Arsenal great and my personal favourite.
