United came flying out the blocks and took the lead after just two minutes when Wayne Rooney’s shot came back off the post only for defender Martinez to inexplicably slice the ball into his own net.
Both sides had chances to add to the scoreline but it ended 1-0 and United move on to 7 points in Group A, a single point ahead of second placed Bayer Leverkusen who thrashed Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0.
