Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he turned down the chance to sign Eden Hazard and Petr Cech before they eventually signed for rivals Chelsea.

Ferguson’s new autobiography went on sale earlier this week and among the revelations were the many players he rues missing out on during his time at Old Trafford, and it turns out two of them are current Blues stars Hazard and Cech.

United had the opportunity to sign the Belgian attacker in 2010 but instead opted to sign Bebe for £7.4m on the advice of then assistant boss Carlos Querioz.

It proved to be a disastrous move as the 23-year-old flopped in England while Hazard joined Chelsea two years later and has since excelled at Stamford Bridge.

“With feet like his, Bebe was able to score 20 goals per season,”

“We saw Hazard, but instead hired Bebe. Who would have bet that would not work?

“It is clear that he had a difficult childhood wandering the streets of Lisbon.” Ferguson is quoted as saying by the Express.

Fergie also recalls the time he almost signed Czech Republic international goalkeeper Petr Cech from Sparta Prague in 2001, when he was just a 19-year-old, but decided against the move as he thought he was too young.

Cech moved to Rennes before joining Chelsea in 2004 when Claudio Ranieri paid £7m for him, and he’s since gone on to establish himself as one of the world’s best goalkeepers, winning three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League during his 9 years in west London.

Of course all managers have tails of the ones that got away but it must have been difficult for Ferguson to watch two players he turned down go on to star for Premier League rivals Chelsea.
